According to the findings of linguistics, cultural anthropology, science of history and, in more
recent years, population genetics, the Roma’s Indian origin is considered a fact. How their ancestors
came from India to Europe, and when this migration took place, its reasons and who exactly these
people were is, however, open to assumption.. The pre-european history of the Roma is a matter of
reconstruction.
Introduction /Summary
The Roma’s Indian origin is uncontested. By analyzing Romani, the Roma’s language, and comparing it with other languages, it could be shown that the Roma migrated from Central India to the Eastern parts of Northern India, and probably stayed there for some time. Then, they possibly moved via Persia and Armenia to the Byzantine Empire, to Asia Minor and later on to Greece. Linguistic findings point at a fairly homogenous group which arrived in the Byzantine Empire around the year 1000, because all groups of Roma existing today have a common linguistic basis, which also includes parts of lexicon and grammar taken from Greek.
Also; according to more recent, preliminary findings of population genetics, the Roma’s ancestors are Indian. These were supposedly part of a relatively small homogenous group, as shown by analyses of blood groups. Differentiations within this group probably only occurred at the time of their arrival and their early spread into Europe, that is to say; from the 13th century onwards. Just like linguistics and genetics, cultural anthropology assumes that the Roma originally came from India. It refers, among others, to socio- cultural institutions like the “kris”, the traditional form of jurisdiction with the Lovara- and Kalderaš-Roma, or to certain rules within the groups, such as the commands of cleanness. Both, group internal jurisdiction and the commands of cleanness, can also be found, like certain religious notions of some groups of Roma, on the Indian subcontinent. Direct socio-cultural connections between the Roma and Indian groups, however, have so far not been established.
Science of history has sources at its disposal which do not talk about the Roma, but about groups which are reminiscent of the Roma in many respects, and which have been equated with them in the past. None of these assumptions could be proved; yet such documents from Persia and the Arabian region allow us to form a picture of the nomadic population in those regions in which the Roma travelled, in all likelihood, in the course of their migration from India to Europe.

Forskningen inom språk, kulturantropologi, historia och befolkningsgenetik har redan kunnat fastslå att romerna härstammar från Indien. Men hur, när och varför deras förfäder migrerade från Indien till Europa är fortfarande obesvarat och romernas föreuropeiska tid försöker nu återskapas.

Romernas indiska ursprung är obestritt. I analyser och jämförelser av romani chib, romernas språk, med andra språk kan det visas hur romerna flyttade från centrala Indien till de östra delarna av norra Indien och hur de förmodligen stannade där en tid. Därefter flyttade de troligtvis via Persien och Armenien, till Mindre Asien och senare till Grekland. Samtliga fynd pekar på en någorlunda homogen grupp som slutligen anlände i det Bysantinska riket kring år 1000, eftersom alla kvarvarande romska grupper har en gemensam språklig grund som innefattar delar av ordförråd och grammatik från grekiskan.
Preliminära resultat från färska befolkningsgenetiska undersökningar har, även de, pekat på att romernas förfäder är indiska. Blodgruppsstudier har visat att de förmodligen var del av en relativt liten och homogen grupp. Uppblandningar inom gruppen inträffade förmodligen först vid romernas ankomst och tidiga spridning in i Europa, det vill säga från 1200-talet och framåt. Precis som lingvistiken och i genetiken så har även kulturantropologin hittat bevis för romernas ursprung i Indien. Den har hittat likheter på den indiska halvön bland annat i socialkulturella institutioner såsom "kris" - den traditionella formen av rättegång hos lovara- och kalderaschromerna - och även på särskilda regler såsom föreskrifterna kring renlighet. Däremot har inga direkta sociokulturella förbindelser mellan romerna och indiska grupper kunnat etableras.
Historikerna har en del källor som inte nämner romerna som grupp utan talar om andra grupper som påminner om romerna på många sätt, och som tidigare likställts med dem. Det är obevisade antaganden, men tack vare sådana dokument från Persien och de arabiska regionerna har vi kunnat bilda en uppfattning om nomadbefolkningen i de områden som romerna sannolikt färdades genom under migrationen från Indien till Europa.
