Source text - English This discourse has its roots in neo-Malthusian notions of carrying capacity. Neo-Malthusians
argue that human population growth, coinciding with increases in affluence and per capita rates
of consumption, will cause exponentially increasing demands on natural resources, leading inevitably
to shortages, land and water degradation, and distributional conflicts. The potential of technological innovation as a solution to these problems is considered remote due to
lower stocks of human capital and therefore latent innovative capacity, which ultimately produces an ingenuity gap between innovative and stagnant societies that exacerbates existing asymmetries of access.
This perspective is criticized on theoretical and empirical grounds. Gleditsch argued that the causal mechanisms are too elaborate (operating through multiple paths of causality and several layers of intervening variables) and failed to account for differing levels of economic and political development on resource consumption and conflict that is, highly developed economies and polities may experience lessened conflict over resources even as demand increases.
Translation - Czech Kořeny tohoto diskursu leží v neomalthusiánských předpokladech úživnosti. Neomalthusiáni tvrdí, že růst lidské populace, který souvisí s růstem blahobytu a podílem spotřeby na hlavu, způsobí exponenciální růst poptávky po přírodních zdrojích. To podle nich nevyhnutelně povede k nedostatku, degradaci půd, kvality vody a distribučním konfliktům. Řešení těchto problémů spočívající v potenciálu technologických inovací, se však všeobecně považuje za vzdálené vzhledem k omezeným zásobám lidských zdrojů a tudíž skryté inovační schopnosti, která v důsledku vytváří propast důvtipu mezi inovujícími a stagnujícími společnostmi, která ještě zhoršuje již existující asymetrii v přístupu ke zdrojům.
Tento úhel pohledu je kritizován jak z teoretického tak z empirického hlediska. Gleditsch tvrdil, že kauzální vztahy (operující skrz několikanásobné trajektorie příčinnosti a několik vrstev přidaných proměnných) jsou příliš komplikované a nedokážou vysvětlit rozporuplné úrovně ekonomického a politického vývoje při spotřebě zdrojů a konfliktech. To znamená, že navzdory růstu poptávky mohou vysoce rozvinuté ekonomiky a vládní politika procházet mírnějšími konflikty.
