As part of the Acid Tar lagoon remediation project at the [..] Site (Belgium) approx. 100.000 m³ of lagoon and groundwater needed to be treated in an on site water treatment plant.
The water at the site, both lagoon water and groundwater beneath the lagoons, was heavily contaminated with anionic detergents (up to 150 mg/l), heavy metals (Fe/Mn) and COD (up to 9.000 mg/l). Due to the inherent acid nature of the acid tar, the waste water variations of pH levels occurred from 6 to even 1.
In a first stage of the project DEC carried out several laboratory tests and set up a pilot test comparing various water treatment techniques based on the BATNEEC principle (neutralization, decantation and removal of solid parts using chamber filter presses, chemical oxidation using ozone and/or UV and activated carbon filters).
The final design of the water treatment plant consisted of physico-chemical neutralization and decantation processes followed by sand and activated carbon filtration. All contaminants could be removed during the project execution with an efficiency of over 99%.
Sludge produced during the water treatment processes were sent to a filter press and further processed in the on-site tar processing unit.

[..] (Beļģijā) sērskābā gudrona baseina sanācijas projekta ietvaros uz vietas uzstādītā attīrīšanas iekārtā tika attīrīti 100 000 m3 baseina satura un gruntsūdeņu.
Gan ūdens baseinos, gan grunstsūdeņi zem baseiniem bija ievērojami piesārņoti ar anjonus saturošiem mazgāšanas līdzekļiem (līdz 150 mg/l), smagajiem metāliem (Fe, Mn) un COD (ķīmiskais skābekļa patēriņš) tajos sasniedza 9 000 mg/l. Tā kā sērskābajam gudronam piemīt skābes īpašības, notekūdeņu pH līmenis svārstījās amplitūdā no 6 līdz pat 1.
Projekta 1. etapā DEC veica vairākus laboratorijas testus un realizēja pilotpārbaudi, salīdzinot vairākas ūdens attīrīšanas tehnoloģijas, kas izstrādātas saskaņā ar Ķīmiskās rūpniecības nozares vadlīnijās (BALTNEEC) noteiktajiem principiem (tas ir, neitralizēšana, pārliešana un cieto daļiņu atfiltrēšana, izmantojot kamerfiltrpreses, ķīmiskā oksidēšana ar ozonu un/vai UV aktivētās ogles filtros).
Ūdens attīrīšanas iekārtas projekta gala variantā tika izstrādāta tehnoloģija, kuru veidoja sekojoši procesi - fizikāli ķīmiskā neitralizēšana un pārliešana, kam seko filtrēšana caur smilts un aktīvās ogles filtriem. Rezultātā tika likvidēts viss piesārņojums, un projekta efektivitāte pārsniedza 99%.
Ūdens attīrīšanas procesa laikā radušies nosēdumi caur filtrpresi tika tālāk novadīti pārstrādei uz vietas uzstādītajā gudrona pārstrādes iekārtā.
