Source text - English The National Program of Fight against AIDS (NPFA) indicates that the Prevalence rates of HIV1 and HIV2 in 2004 were respectively 4% and 2.7% among Guinea Bissau population over 15 years of age. In the Bafata region where Plan works, these rates are the highest in the country with 5.8% and 3.3% respectively. In Gabu region, these rates are 3.9% and 3.3% respectively. Epidemiological data indicates that Guinea Bissau is one of the few countries with the two types of virus, HIV 1 & HIV 2. An analysis of the trends of the two types of virus in Guinea Bissau revealed a significant increase in the HIV 1 from 0.8% in 1993 to 4.1% in 2001 and a decrease in the HIV2 from 4.9% in 1993 to 2.7 in 2001. HIV 1 is more infectious, has a shorter incubation period and leads to death more quickly.
The majority of people of Guinea Bissau are subsistence farmers who are dependant on their cashew crop, many of whom cannot read or write. Misconceptions about HIV/AIDS are rife, there is little information available and little is done to prevent infection.
