AT&T's Business Transformation Starts With The Network
As the 20th Century closed, external market dynamics brought radical changes for telecommunications providers. For AT&T, the clear strategic choice was to transform the company, change its focus on the consumer market and reinvest to serve business customers as an enterprise-focused IP networking company.
The Clear Strategic Choice: Transform the Company
At the highest level, AT&T would not just help companies find better ways to do business. It would give them the networking tools needed to reinvent themselves, as AT&T did, so they could compete more effectively across the globe.
There was a lot of work to do, starting with the network infrastructure AT&T used to support its own business. Converging the company’s multiple networks into a single, much simpler network would create a more agile infrastructure better suited to supporting the dynamic applications that are driving business transformation.
Supporting some 60,000 users at 3,500 locations in 57 countries and delivering four terabytes of data traffic and three million minutes of voice traffic every day, AT&T’s internal network infrastructures incorporated 2,000 application and network servers and included no fewer than 22 separate wide area networks (WANs) providing voice and data services.
While impressive on paper, the span and complexity of these internal networks raised significant issues. A large and costly staff assigned to keep the networks running found it challenging to maintain reliability and prepare for emergencies and outages. The networks’ design made it impossible to monitor and manage network performance from end-to-end. The networks were disparate, unconnected and inefficient.
According to Andy Daudelin, AT&T Vice President, IT Operations, a new and far more efficient network would be essential to make the company’s transformation possible. Network planners listed six business requirements the new network must meet:
• Boost productivity
• Support globalization
• Enhance employee mobility
• Reduce TCO and make costs variable, instead of fixed
• Improve network reliability
• Protect information from cyber-attack and other forms of disruption
Could a single network meet all of these requirements? In 1995, when the decision was made, the idea that one network could do it all was not widely accepted. Yet the AT&T network had carried information in the Internet Protocol (IP) format, a key enabler of network consolidation, since the late 1980s. AT&T’s experience suggested that a consolidated network would work, and the company set forth to make it happen.

No obstante, la red de AT&T había transportado información en el formato del Protocolo de Internet (IP) - un artífice clave para la consolidación de redes - desde finales de los años 80. La experiencia de AT&T parecía indicar que una red unificada funcionaría, y la empresa puso manos a la obra para hacerlo realidad.

erlaubt die Kommunikation selbst bis in die fernsten Winkel der Erde. Heute werden Verbindungen natürlich im Selbstwählverfahren aufgebaut, aber das war
nicht immer so! Am Anfang der Fernsprechtechnik gab es keine automatischen Vermittlungsstellen. Man nannte dem "Fräulein vom Amt" den gewünschten Zielanschluss und die Verbindung wurde manuell aufgebaut.
Warum Vermittlung?
Am Anfang war Fernsprechen auf die drahtgebundene Übertragung von Sprachsignalen
zu einem einzigen oder wenigen Teilnehmern beschränkt. Bei einem Gesprächswunsch
wurde die Leitung des jeweiligen Teilnehmers manuell an das eigene Telefon
angeschlossen. Bedarf an Wahleinrichtungen und Telefonnummern gab es nicht. Einer
Erweiterung des Systems in dieser Form waren enge Grenzen gesetzt, da
die volle Erreichbarkeit aller Teilnehmer (Tln) mit direkt verlegten Leitungen einen
enormen Aufwand bedeutet. Der Grund dafür liegt im (etwa) quadratischen
Anwachsen der Anzahl der benötigten Leitungen mit zunehmender Zahl der
Tln. Moderne Fernsprechnetze sind heute daher anders aufgebaut
und verfügen über ausgeklügelte Vermittlungseinrichtungen.

En la actualidad las conexiones se establecen a través de un procedimiento automático, ¡pero esto no fue siempre de este modo! En los comienzos de la telefonía no existían las centrales telefónicas automáticas. Se llamaba a la “operadora” solicitando la comunicación deseada y la conexión era establecida manualmente.
¿Porque aparece la conmutación?
En los comienzos, el sistema telefónico se limitaba a transmitir por medio de cables señales de voz a unos pocos abonados. Ante una solicitud de llamada se conectaba las líneas de los respectivos abonados a sus aparatos telefónicos en forma manual. No eran necesarios otros equipos ni un número telefónico. La expansión de un sistema de estas características hubiera impuesto grandes restricciones, ya que la llegada a todos los abonados con tendidos de cables directos hubiera significado enormes gastos. El fundamento de esto se basa en que el número de líneas necesarias se incrementa de manera casi cuadrática cuando la cifra de abonados aumenta. Por esto, las redes telefónicas modernas son construidas en forma diferente y disponen de sofisticados equipos de conmutación.
