Source text - English Origin of the Moon
Before Apollo, it was widely believed that the lunar exploration missions would provide the necessary information for a final answer to the question of origin. It was even believed that in the lunar materi¬als were the records of the birth of the Sun. The Moon was described by some as 'The Rosetta Stone of the Solar System.' This did not happen. As dis¬cussed above, the primitive lunar crustal materials have been subjected to much metamorphism due to large impact events. These monumental events have erased the records of the Moon's birth.
Any theory for the origin of the Moon must be consistent with what we know about the Earth and the solar system, as well as about the Moon itself. Most importantly, any proposed mechanism must explain the great age of the Moon, 4.6 thousand million years, the same as Earth, and the differences in composition between the Earth and Moon.38
Today, the theories or models for the origin of the Moon may be divided into three general classes. The Moon is either Earth's wife, captured from some other orbit; daughter, fissioned directly from the Earth; or sister, accreted from the same cloud of dust as the Earth.
The capture theories propose that the Moon formed elsewhere in the solar system, or even beyond and that from an orbit that passed close to that of the Earth, the Moon was slowed down and captured into an orbit about the Earth. With the Moon a captive body, the differences in chemical composition between the Earth and Moon are easily explained. However, in order for it to be captured, the Moon would have to be in a very special orbit and, even then, to be slowed to nearly match the orbital speed of the Earth. The forces needed to slow the Moon would raise great tides in it and in the Earth. This, some scientists argue, would shatter the Moon to bits. At any rate, no record of the inevitable cataclysm of capture can be found in the rocks of either the Moon or Earth.
The idea that the Moon came directly from the Earth was first proposed by Sir George Darwin in 1880. The theory is still viable and has received some support in recent years. The concept of the fission theory starts with a fluid body rotating around the Sun. As heavier components settle at the core and lighter ones float on top, the spin is increased to cause rotational instability. The latter causes elon¬gation of the body perpendicular to the spin axis, until the creation of two separate bodies is achieved. This theory accounts for the chemical differences between the two bodies.
Fission would have occurred after the formation of a core in the part of the body that formed the Earth. The Moon-forming part of the body would then be depleted in the heavier elements. However, dynamic considerations similar to those considered in the capture case also apply to the formation of the Moon by fission. Even if the Earth had turned fast enough and was hot enough to spin off a large chunk, the newborn Moon could not have had the strength to resist being torn apart.
The third alternative, binary accretion, is that the Moon and Earth formed together in orbit about the Sun at the same time and from the same cloud or ring of debris left over from the formation of the solar nebula. The theory proposes that the two bodies would have formed with their own distinctive chemistry. It also explains the rarity of volatile ele¬ments in the lunar materials, which would have been lost by the heat of rapid accretion. Because of this, and because the theory requires the least number of assumptions in terms of dynamics, this is the most popular of the three theories. However, binary accretion is not without faults that many theorists find objectionable.
Thus, the three basic theories of lunar origin are still competing, especially since all three have been modified to accommodate the new findings. Each theory has its share of positive points as well as shortcomings. Today we still must say that the Moon was formed in a manner and a place that we have yet to determine. Based on theory alone, it has been said that the Moon should not be there at all.

كان الرأي السائد قبل بدء مشروع أبوللو هو أن رحلات الاستكشاف القمرية ستوفر المعلومات اللازمة للوصول إلى القول الفصل في مسألة أصل القمر، بل ظن البعض أن القمر يحمل في طياته ما يشرح نشوء الشمس، وهذا ما دفع البعض لوصف القمر بأنه "حجر رشيد المجموعة الشمسية". ولكن كل هذا لم يحدث، فلقد تعرضت المواد الأولية المكونة لقشرة القمر للعديد من التحولات نظراً للأصطدامات القوية التي مسحت آثار وأسرار ميلاد القمر.
ولكي يكتب البقاء لأي نظرية تفسر أصل القمر لابد أن تتوافق مع ما توصلنا إليه حتى الآن بخصوص الأرض والمجموعة الشمسية بالإضافة للقمر نفسه، والأهم هو أن تقوم أي آلية مقترحة لنشوء القمر بتفسير عمره المديد البالغ 4,6 ألف مليون سنة - وهو نفس عمر كوكبنا - بالإضافة إلى الاختلافات التكوينية بينه وبين الأرض.
ويمكن تقسيم النظريات أو النماذج التي تحاول تفسير أصل القمر إلى ثلاثة أقسام عامة؛ فكرة أن القمر زوج الأرض حيث أسرت الأرضُ القمرَ بقوتها من مدار آخر، أو أن القمر ابن الأرض وانفصل أو انقسم عنها مباشرة، أو أنه شقيق الأرض مما يعني انه تكون (أو تزايد) من نفس سحابة الغبار التي تكونت منها الأرض.
وتقترح نظرية الأَسْر أن القمر تكون في أول الأمر في مكان آخر من مجموعتنا الشمسية أو حتى خارج نطاقها وأنه كان يدور في مدار اقترب من مدار الأرض مما أدي إلى إبطاء سرعته وأسره في مدار حول الأرض. وإذا نظرنا إلى القمر على انه جسم مأسور فيمكننا أن نفسر بسهولة الاختلافات التكوينية بينه وبين الأرض، ولكن لكي يؤسر القمر فهذا يلزم أن يكون في مدار خاص للغاية بالإضافة إلى ضرورة أن يكون قد أبطئ لتماثل سرعته سرعة دوران الأرض في مداره حول الشمس. وتكفي القوى اللازمة لإبطاء القمر لإحداث عمليات مد عظيمة عليه وعلى الأرض مما يثير حفيظة بعض العلماء لاقتناعهم بأن مثل هذه القوى الهائلة من شأنها تمزيق وتفتيت القمر، هذا بالإضافة إلى عدم العثور على أي آثار لمثل هذا الاجتياح المدمر على الأرض أو القمر.
أما فكرة أن الأرض هي أصل القمر فكان السير جورج داروين أول من اقترحها في عام 1880. وما زالت هذه النظرية قائمة بل إنها وجدت ما يعضدها في السنوات الماضية (ملحوظة: راعي أن المقال كتب في السبعينات). وتعتمد هذه النظرية - والمعروفة بنظرية الانقسام - على فكرة دوران جسم مائع حول محوره في مدار حول الشمس. ونتيجة لدورانه حول محوره، فإن المكونات الأثقل استقرت في اللب بينما طفت الأخف إلى الأعلى مما أدى إلى زيادة سرعة الدوران حتى حدث إخلال في التوازن نتج عنه استطالة للجسم في اتجاه عمودي على محور الدوران مسببا انقسام هذا الجسم إلى جسمين. وتفسر هذه النظرية الاختلافات الكيماوية بين الأرض والقمر حيث أن هذا الانقسام كان سيحدث بعد تكوين اللب في الجسم المكون للأرض، أما الجسم المكون للقمر فكانت ستفتقر للعناصر الثقيلة. ولكن ينطبق على نظرية الانقسام اعتبارات ديناميكية مثل التي أخذت في الاعتبار عند التعرض لنظرية الأسر. وإذا ما فرضنا جدلاً أن درجة حرارة وسرعة دوران الأرض كانت كافية لطرد جزء منها، ما كان سيكون للقمر الوليد القوة الكافية لمقاومة تمزقه بسبب القوى الناتجة
والبديل الثالث هو التزايد الثنائي حيث تكونت الأرض والقمر أثناء دورانهما حول الشمس في نفس الوقت ومن نفس سحابة الحطام المتخلف من السديم الشمسي. وتقترح هذه النظرية أن الأرض والقمر قد تكونا بكيمياء مختلف كما تعطي تفسيراً لندرة العناصر الطيارة في المواد القمرية نظراً لفقدانها بسبب الحرارة الناتجة عن سرعة عملية التزايد، ولهذا السبب بالإضافة لاحتياجها لأقل عدد من الافتراضات الديناميكية فإن هذا يعتبر أشهر النظريات الثلاث، ولكن هذا لا ينفي أن لهذه النظرية نقاط ضعفها والتي يعترض عليها العديد من المتخصصين.
وبالتالي فإن المنافسة بين النظريات الثلاث الأساسية حول أصل القمر لازالت قائمة خاصة أن كل منهم قد عُدل لتتوائم مع المستجدات العلمية. ولكل نظرية نقاط قوة وضعف. واليوم لا نملك إلا أن نقول بأن القمر تكون في مكان وبطريقة لا نعلمها حتى الآن، بل يقال إنه طبقاً للحسابات النظرية فقط ما كان للقمر أن يكون في مكانه هذا أصلاً.
