Source text - English 1. The cyanogenic glucoside molecule found abundantly in Yuca is similar to the cyanogenic glucoside amygdalin which was discovered in 1980 to be a direct scavenger of the hydroxyl radical at a high rate1,2.
I am assuming the cyanogenic glucoside found in Yuca (mostly linamarin) are functionally the same as amygdalin in relation to scavenging ability. They were both used by Laetrile proponent doctors to treat cancer and considered therapeutically similar if not equivalent. Amygdalin is the natural gluco-cyanide molecule found in peach and apricot seeds and many other plants.
Laetrile was a semi-synthetic version of amygdalin popular as a cancer treatment in the U.S. in the 1970’s until the government forbid its use.
Yuca diets high in the similar gluco-cyanide linamarin were employed mostly at clinics in Indonesia and the Philippines where Yuca was widely grown and eaten. Those Asian doctors claimed successes with that treatment. Yuca was unavailable in the U.S.A. during the Laetrile period (1970’s) and did not get a fair trial as an alternative to the pharmaceutical approach (pills and injections) of amygdalin to treat cancer.
The FDA poisoned the well of cyanogenic glucoside research in cancer in the late 70’s by declaring it a dangerous poison, forbid its use by anyone and arrested and hounded any doctor foolish enough to resist. None the less the experiments proving the hydroxyl scavenging ability of cyanogenic glycosides (at least amygdalin) still sits on the library shelf unchallenged.

Asumo que el cianuro que contiene la yuca (en su mayor parte linamarin), tiene la misma función de la amigdalina, ya que posee la misma capacidad depuradora. Estos eran utilizados por médicos favorecedores del Laetrile para tratar el cáncer y eran considerados terapéuticamente semejantes, o en ocasiones, hasta equivalentes. La amigdalina es una molécula natural del glucósido cianogénico encontrada en las semillas de melocotón y albaricoque, como en muchas otras plantas.
El Laetrile era una versión semi- sintética de la amigdalina, utilizado como parte del tratamiento contra el cáncer en EE.UU. durante los años 70, hasta que el gobierno prohibió su uso.
Las dietas de yuca altas en sustancias similares al glucósido cianogénico y al linamarin fueron empleadas mayormente por médicos en dispensarios de Indonesia y las Filipinas, donde la yuca crece y es consumida abundantemente. Estos médicos asiáticos declararon que este tratamiento era exitoso. No es de sorprender que nadie ha disputado a favor de los experimentos que confirman que el glucósido cianogénico (al menos la amigdalina) tiene la habilidad de remover los radicales hidróxilos.
