Bio

To whom it may concern,

My
name is Charlotte Mörk and I am writing to you since I am interested in a
position as translator.

I’m
applying for this position because I think the work is so much fun, which is
important to me. I also know I would do a great job of it. I have also recently
moved and now live in a house outside Kungälv, Sweden (before I lived in a
small sublet flat in town). On a more personal plane I have also recently moved
in with my wonderful boyfriend. This was a natural point to reflect over things
like what I want, interests, commuting etc. and I realized that what I really
want is to go back to my passion and work with language.

The
languages I work with are Swedish and English, in both directions. I translate,
proof-read, edit, transcribe and interpret various forms of texts, or, when it
comes to interpretation, forms of meetings. If the assignment is proof-reading,
I also work with Norwegian and Danish. The forms of text might be literature,
prose, non-fiction or advertising; but also more formal types of texts from
various public services such as health care, social services, The Swedish
National Unemployment Agency, various municipal agencies, The Swedish National
Board of Immigration, law firms etc. I also do some layout editing if I have
the time.

These
forms of working with the written and spoken language are things I am
passionate about and I think are both stimulating and exiting. Language is for
me both serious and playful at the same time – it’s very important to communicate
the content in a correct way, but the flexibility and joy in how to use
language makes the work creative. This work is not just a source of income for
me, but also a way of continuing to learn and develop my interest in languages.
I also find language skills, especially English, to be key to new experiences,
contacts and travels.

When
it comes to translation I consider it vitally important to make sure the
translation is correct, but also to take the client’s wishes into
consideration. Does the client want the text to be casual or formal in tone?
Who is the text written for and to what purpose? What kind of text is it? What
are the practical prerequisites regarding e.g. deadline and file format? Does
the client want some form of editing as well? All these things have an effect
on the text and how it is written. I see good communication as a given
prerequisite for a good result and a job well done so that both I and the
client are happy with the result. Should any questions arise regarding the text
during the translation process, this is essential.

My
CV reflects my passion for languages. My formal education in languages comes
from my teacher trainee studies as a language teacher for upper secondary school
and adult education. I have also worked in these fields for several years. I
have also, parallel to this, worked for several years as a translator and
interpreter for various agencies as well as been self-employed as a translator.
I have also worked as a transcriber. My work experience also includes being
Translation Manager for a large translation and interpretation agency, as well
as most recently being Project Manager at a translation agency.

My
studies in English are based in my teacher trainee studies and I have thus
completed A, B and C level courses at university level. These courses have
included grammar, literature, linguistics, text & culture and written
proficiency. Since my studies have been directed towards teaching, they have
also included pedagogical aspects like differences between languages, how to
teach and translate English into other languages. I had the privilege of taking
my C-level courses in English at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK where
the University of Gothenburg has had a department for many years. Apart from
during my studies, I have lived in the UK before, this time in St Andrews,
Scotland during time off from my studies to work in 2005.

I
look forward to further contact and the chance to introduce myself in person!

Best
regards

Charlotte
Mörk
