The Way of Life and The Way of Death
Jeremiah 21:1-14

Today’s text is again asking us: Who is speaking? In whose perspective, will we read this text? These are the questions we must ask, because we must look at the text in the context of the one who speaks the words. By doing so, we are able to determine the intentions of the speaker and his heart for his audience.

In today’s text, from the very first verse, it is clearly stated who the speaker is.

Jeremiah 21:1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord...

The word came from the Lord. When the word comes, it is the indicator of the manifestation of the will of God.

But right there and then, there were visitors who came to see Jeremiah. They were the messengers sent by King Zedekiah, named Pashhur and Zephaniah. This is not the same Zephaniah that we know, the prophet. And we find out the reason for their visit in verse 2.
