الصحة العقلية هي حالة من العافية على الصعيد العاطفي والنفسي والاجتماعي، وهي تؤثر على شعور الشخص وتفاعله وتأقلمه مع الحياة وأحداثها. كما أنها تحدد كيفية تعامل الشخص مع الضغوطات وكيفية اتخاذ قراراته. والمرض العقلي اضطراب يؤثر في طريقة تفكير الشخص ومزاجه وسلوكه، وتسببه عدة عوامل مثل الوراثة والجينات وأحداث الحياة التي يمر بها الشخص، مثل تعرضه للتوتر أو للاعتداء اللفظي أو الجسمي أو التحرش.
ووفقا لمنظمة الصحة العالمية فإن الأشخاص الذين يعانون من مرض عقلي شديد عادة ما يموتون قبل الأصحاء، ويطلق على هذا اسم "الموت المبكر. ويقدر العمر سنة مقارنة 25 إلى 10المتوقع لدى المصابين بأمراض عقلية شديدة أقل بـ بالآخرين*. ووفقا للمنظمة فإن الأمراض العقلية الشديدة تشمل الاكتئاب المتوسط إلى الشديد، والذهان واضطرابات الاكل واضطرابات المزاج ثنائية القطب.

اضطرابات ثنائية القطب:
وتسمى أيضا اضطرابات "الاكتئاب-الهوس"، وفيها يمر الشخص بتقلبات حادة في المزاج والنشاط والسلوك بين الاكتئاب الذي يتميز بانخفاض الطاقة والانسحاب، إلى الهوس.
الفصام:
وهو مرض عقلي يسمع فيه الشخص المصاب أو يرى أشياء غير موجودة، ويكون لديه قناعات غير صحيحة مثل أن الآخرين يستطيعون قراءة أفكاره أو أن الجن أو الشياطين تتلبسه أو تتحكم فيه.
اضطرابات الأكل:
وتنتج عن اضطراب نفسي يؤدي إلى موقف غير طبيعي نحو الطعام، مما يقود إلى تغيير الشخص لعاداته في الأكل وسلوكه تجاهه، ويضم فقدان الشهية العصبي والشره المرضي والأكل الشره .

Mental health is a state that comes from emotional, psychological and social wellness that can affect a person’s feeling, reaction and adjustment to life and events. It also affects how a person reacts to stressors and how they make decisions. Mental illness is a disorder that affects a person’s way of thinking, mood, and behavior. It is caused by several factors such as genetics, and life events that happen to a person such as exposure to stress, verbal or physical abuse, or harassment.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people who suffer from severe mental illness usually die before the healthy. This is referred to as “Premature Death”. The life expectancy of those who suffer from mental illness is about 10 to 25 years less than those who do not. According to the WHO severe mental illness includes: average to severe depression, psychosis, eating disorders, and mood disorders.
Depression:
Depression is a mental illness characterized by an extended period of mere sadness; it affects the behavior of the afflicted as well as their willingness to work and their life. This can lead to severe consequences, including suicide.
Anxiety Disorders:
A person with anxiety feels worry in a way that is unjustified or illogical. The symptoms may include continuous feeling of fear and panic, insomnia, heart palpitations, muscular tension. Also, within it, there are phobia types, social anxiety and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Bipolar Disorders:
This is also called “Manic-Depression” disorders, in them a person passes through severe swings in mood, activity, and behavior, where they pass through depression characterized by low energy and withdrawal to mania.
Schizophrenia:
This is a mental illness where the afflicted person hears or sees things that are not real and has false beliefs that people can read their minds or that an evil spirit has control over them.
Eating Disorders:
This comes from a psychological disorder that leads to an abnormal attitude toward food, thus causing a person to change their habits and behaviors regarding food. This can include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and Eating Disorders.
