Source text - English ONCE UPON A TIME
I came to fairy tales twice,first as a child and years later as an adult. Like mothers and fathers everywhere, my parents read Hansel and Gretel,Jack and the Beanstalk,and other popular tales to me. But my most Yi\id childhood memories of fairy tales came by way of
Walt Disney. I remember sitting on the edge of my seat in a darkened movie theater watching Snow vVhite and holding my breath as the gamekeeper prepared to cut out theheroine'sheart. Like the children around me, I gasped with relief when he disobeyed the evil queen's edict and let Snow White escape.For weeks afterward, I chanted "Hi,ho,hi,ho, it's off to work we go." Today I may have trouble naming all the dwarfs,but the images of the e\il queen, Snow \\'hite,and the seYen dwarfs are forever emblazoned on my memory.
Many years passed before I came to fairy tales the second time.
By then I was teaching at a uniYersity where I trained graduate students to do psychotherapy with children. As part of my duties I also taught undergraduate courses. One of my favorite courses, a
seminar entitled "The Psychology of Fantasy and Folklore," grew out of my longstanding interest in the role that fantasy playsin children'slives. Thepurpose of the seminar was to ex-plore the meaning of fairy tales and discover how they affect a child's psychological deYelopment. Sitting in a circle on Monday afternoons,the students and I discussed the classical tales of the
Grimm brothers as well as that most famous twentieth-century fairy tale, The Wizard of Oz.
I was struck by how impassioned students would become when
we talked about the stories. The atmosphere was different from that of other courses in which students merely sat back and took notes. EYeryone had a favorite fairy tale from childhood that struck an emotional chord. One young woman recalled her mother reading Cinderella at bedtime and insisting that her mother repeat the sequence with the fairy godmother before turning off the lights.
There was something about the si!Yer and gold gown and thejewels that was irresistible.

S pohádkami jsem se setkal dvakrát. Jednou jako dítě a podruhé o mnoho let později jako dospělý. Moji rodiče mi, stejně jako maminky a tatínkové na celém světě, předčítali O perníkové chaloupce, Jakuba a kouzelné fazole a další pohádky. Moje nejživější vzpomínky na pohádky z dětství jsou však spojené s Waltem Disneym. Dodnes si
pamatuji, jak jsem seděl na kraji sedačky v setmělém kinosále a se zatajeným dechem jsem sledoval hajného ze Sněhurky, jak se chystá vyříznout Sněhurčino srdce. A stejně jako ostatní děti v sále jsem i já vydechl úlevou, když nakonec neuposlechl příkaz zlé královny a nechal Sněhurku naživu. A ještě týdny poté jsem si prozpěvoval „Hej hou, hej hou, už trpaslíci jdou.“ Dnes už bych asi jen stěží vyjmenoval jména všech trpaslíků,ale podoba zlé královny, Sněhurky a sedmi trpaslíků ve mně přetrvala doteď.
Než jsem se dostal k pohádkám podruhé, uběhlo mnoho let. Učil jsem na univerzitě, kde jsem vedl kurzy dětské psychoterapie. Jeden z mých oblíbených předmětů pro studenty bakalářského stupně byl seminář s názvem Psychologie fantazie a folkloru. Odtud pramenil i můj dlouhodobý zájem o roli fantazie v životě dětí. Cílem tohoto semináře bylo prozkoumat význam pohádek a zjistit, jak pohádky ovlivňují vývoj dětské psychiky. Každé pondělí odpoledne jsme se se studenty sešli a probírali jsme nejrůznější příběhy – Pohádkami bratří Grimmů počínaje a Čarodějem ze země Oz konče.
Velmi mě překvapilo, jak zaníceně studenti o pohádkách mluví. Atmosféra byla úplně jiná než v jiných seminářích, kde jenom seděli a zapisovali si. Snad každý měl svou oblíbenou pohádku z dětství, která ho zasáhla. Tak například jedna dívka si vzpomínala na to, jak jí maminka před spaním četla Popelku. Než se zhasla světla,
vyžadovala, aby maminka zas a znovu opakovala pasáž o dobré víle. Na jejím zlatostříbrném šatě a špercích bylo pro malou holčičku něco neodolatelného.
Proč vlastně pohádky vzbuzují tak silné reakce ještě léta potom, co se s nimi setkáme poprvé? Změní nás nějakým způsobem a pokud ano, jak? Co je to za mocné kouzlo? Snažil jsem se na tyto otázky najít odpověď a přitom jsem zjistil, že já i mí studenti žijeme v zajetí mnoha mýtů, které pohádky obklopují.
