Multicultural society seems to have been abandoned at birth. Judged unviable and left to fend for itself, its death by neglect is being loudly proclaimed on all sides. The corpse is now being laid to rest amid the multiple anxieties of the “war on terror.” The murderous culprits responsible for its demise are institutional indifference and political resentment. They have been fed by the destruction of welfare states and the evacuation of public good, by privatization and marketization. The resurgent imperial power of the United States has made multiculturalism an aspect of the clash of integral and incompatible civilizations, thereby transmitting an additional negative energy into this delicate postcolonial process. Across Europe, parties that express popular opposition to immigration have triumphed at the polls. Xenophobia and nationalism are thriving. In Britain, difficulties arising from what is now seen as the unrealistic or unwelcome obligation to dwell peaceably with aliens and strangers somehow confirm the justice of these sorry developments. It now appears as though any desire to combine cultural diversity with a hospitable civic order (one that night, for example, be prepared to translate its own local terms into other languages or see immigration as a potential asset rather than an obvious defeat) must be subjected to ridicule and abuse.
Of course, the briefest look around confirms that multicultural society has not actually expired. The noisy announcement of its demise is itself a political gesture, an act of wishful thinking. It is aimed at abolishing any ambition toward plurality and at consolidating the growing sense that it is now illegitimate to believe that multiculture can and should be orchestrated by government in the public interest. In these circumstances, diversity becomes a dangerous feature of society. It brings only weakness, chaos, and confusion. Because unanimity is the best source of necessary strength and solidarity, it is homogeneity rather than diversity that provides the new rule.
Rather than lament the end of the various initiatives that have discredited the wholesome dream of multicultural society and reduced it to the dry dogma of a ready-mixed multiculturalism, this book offers an unorthodox defense of this twentieth-century utopia of tolerance, peace, and mutual regard. Toward that end, I argue that the political conflicts which characterize multicultural societies can take on a very different aspect if they are understood to exist firmly in a context supplied by imperial and colonial history. Though that history remains marginal and largely unacknowledged, surfacing only in the service of nostalgia and melancholia, it represents a store of unlikely connections and complex interpretative resources. The imperial and colonial part continues to shape political life in the overdeveloped-but-no-longer-imperial countries.
The argument that follows warns against the revisionist accounts of imperial and colonial life that have proliferated in recent years. These popular works may salve the national conscience, but they compound the marginality of colonial history, spurn its substantive lessons, and obstruct the development of multiculturalism by making the formative experience of empire less profound and less potent in shaping the life of colonizing powers than it actually was. This popular, revisionist output is misleading and dangerous because it feeds the illusion that Britain has been or can be disconnected from its imperial past. The proponents of this view rightly appreciate that a new form of colonial domination is being instituted as part of a heavily militarized globalization process. They are correct also in seeing that familiarity with the conduct of European empires has much to teach the contemporary theorists of imperial geopolitics. However, they are wrong both when they fail to recognize that the ambiguities and defects of past colonial relations persist and when they fail to appreciate that those enduring consequences of empire can be implicated in creating and amplifying many current problems. Indeed, the evasive meanings of colonial history and its potential value to the multiculturalism of the future are pending inside the new global role of the United States as successor to the European empires that were defeated and transformed during the twentieth century. It is all the more worrying that when colonial history and memory do manage to interrupt the trancelike moods of contemporary consumer culture, they have usually been whitewashed in order to promote imperialist nostalgia or sanctified so that they endorse the novel forms of colonial rule currently being enforced by the economic and military means at the disposal of a unipolar global order.
These deluded patterns of historical reflection and self-understanding are not natural, automatic, or necessarily beneficial to either rulers or ruled. Instead of reinflating imperial myths and instrumentalizing imperial history, I contend that frank exposure to the grim and brutal details of my country’s colonial past should be made useful: first, in shaping the character of its emergent multicultural relations, and second, beyond its borders, by being set to work as an explicit challenge to the revised conceptions of sovereignty that have been invented to accommodate the dreams of the new imperial order. The revisionist ways of approaching nationality, power, law, and the history of imperial nomination are, of course, fully compatible with the novel geopolitical rules elaborated after September 11, 2001. They have also been designed to confirm to the economic machinery of weightless capitalism and work best when the substance of colonial history and the wounds of imperial domination have been mystified or, better still, forgotten.
As the postcolonial and post-Cold War model of global authority takes shape and reconfigures relationships between the overdeveloped, the developing, and the developmentally arrested worlds, it is important to ask what critical perspectives might nurture the ability and the desire to live with difference on an increasingly divided but also convergent planet? We need to knowwhat sorts of insight and reflection might actually help increasingly differentiated societies and anxious individuals to cope successfully with the challenges involved in dwelling comfortably in proximity to the unfamiliar without becoming fearful and hostile. We need to consider whether the scale upon which sameness and difference are calculated might be altered productively so that the strangeness of strangers goes out of focus and other dimensions of a basic sameness can be acknowledged and made significant. We also need to consider how a deliberate engagement with the twentieth century’s histories of suffering might furnish resources for the peaceful accommodation of otherness in relation to fundamental commonality. In particular, we need to ask how an increased familiarity with the bloodstained workings of racism-and the distinctive achievements of the colonial governments it inspired and legitimated-might be made to yield lessons that could be applied more generally, in the demanding contemporary settings of multicultural social relations. This possibility should not imply the exaltation of victimage or the worldhistoric ranking of injustices that always seem to remain the unique property of their victims. Instead of those easy choices, I will suggest that multicultural ethics and politics could be premised upon an agonistic, planetary humanism capable of comprehending the university of our elemental vulnerability to the wrongs we visit upon each other.
In the past, western modernity described these utopian ambitions as cosmopolitan. Until recently, no shame would have automatically been attached to the simple ideals from which they drive, namely that human beings are ordinarily far more alike than they are unalike, that most of the time we can communicate with each other, and that the recognition of mutual worth, dignity, and essential similarity imposes restrictions on how we can behave if we wish to act justly. These currently rather unfashionable notions can be shown to belong to patterns of conversation and reflection that are traceable back into the dimmest historical recesses from which modern consciousness emerged. As far as the importance of empire to the modern period goes, we should remember that these ideas were entangled with and tested by the expansion of Europeans into new territories and compromised, if not wholly discredited, by the consolidation and management of the resulting imperial orders. Turned into thin ethical precepts, these insights were tried again and found wanting, most severely, by the genocidal barbarities and biopolitical atrocities of the twentieth century.
Today, any open stance toward otherness appears old-fashioned, newagey, and quaintly ethnocentric. We have been made acutely aware of the limitations placed upon the twentieth century’s cosmopolitan hopes by the inability to conceptualize multicultural and postcolonial relations as anything other than risk and jeopardy. The same aspirations have also been confounded by the problems involved in producing a worldly vision that is not simply one more imperialistic particularism dressed up in seductive universal garb.
It is more fruitful to interpret the easy refusal of cosmopolitan and humanistic desires as a failure of political imagination. That lapses is closely associated with the defeat of the Left and the retreat of the dissenting social movements with which its fate was intertwined. Those movements pursued forms of internationalism that beyond any simple commitment to the interlocking system of national states and markets. Socialism and Feminism, for example, came into conflict with a merely national focus because they understood political solidarity to require translocal connections. In order for those movement to move, they had to break down the obviousness of the national state as a principle of political culture. In the process, they fostered a degree of disaffection from those who were close by but whose economic and political interests were at odds with their own. This estrangement was boldly articulated in both outlooks. Neither women nor workers were committed to a country. They turned away from the patriotism of national states because they had found larger loyalties. Their task was to fashion new networks of interconnectedness and solidarity that could resonate across boundaries, reach across distances, and evade other cultural and economic obstacles. That hope has faded away in the era of actually existing internationalism which has perversely created a political environment where cosmopolitan and translocal affiliations became suspect and are now virtually unthinkable outside of the limited codes of human-rights talk, medical emergency, and environmental catastrophe.
These restrictions on solidarity can be connected to a sense that the human sciences have become complacent, if they have not been actually undone by their reluctance to be made over as critical sciences of inhumanity. It is also linked to the limitations of philosophical anthropology as a vehicle for ethical and political reflection and to the wider constraints of a difficult moment in which, as I have said, the desire to dwell convivially with difference can appear naïve, trifling, or misplaced in the face of deepening global inequalities and conflicts over resources, on one side, and a routine, almost banal multiculture on the other.
All of these difficulties can be examined through the refusal to consider the politics of race that colors all of them. Neither humanism nor antihumanism have been comfortable or enthusiastic when asked to address the destructive impact of race thinking and racial hierarchy upon their own ways of understanding history and society. The problems have multiplied where the idea of culture has been abused by being simplified, instrumentalized, or trivialized, and particularly through being coupled with notions of identity and belonging that are overly fixed or too easily naturalized as exclusively national phenomena. Recalibrating approaches to culture and identity so that they are less easily reified and consequently less amenable to these misappropriations seems a worthwhile short-term ambition that is compatible with the long-term aims of a reworked and politicized multiculturalism. Indeed, it is doubly welcome because it requires the renunciation of the cheap appeals to absolute national and ethic difference that are currently fashionable.
The habitual resort to culture as unbridgeable division needs to be interpreted with care. It has often been a defensive gesture, employed by minorities and majorities alike when they wrongly imagine that the hollo certainties of “race” and ethnicity can provide a unique protection against various postmodern assault on the coherence and integrity of the self. It seems we are now condemned to work upon ourselves in conformity with the iron laws of mechanical culture just to hold our imperiled and perennially unstable identities together. In that setting, racial difference and racial hierarchy can be made to appear with seeming spontaneity as a stabilizing force. They can supply vivid natural means to lock an increasingly inhospitable and lonely social world in place and to secure one’s own position in turbulent environments. Acceptance that race, nationality, and ethnicity are invariant, relieves the anxieties that arise with a loss of certainty as to who one is and where one fits. The messy complexity of social life is thereby recast as a Manichaean fantasy in which bodies are only ordered and predictable units that obey the rules of a deep cultural biology scripted nowadays in the inaccessible interiority of the genome. The logics of nature and culture have converged, and it is above all the power of race that ensures they speak in the same deterministic tongue.

세계 권력의 탈식민지 탈냉전 모델이 구체화되면서 과잉개발국가와 개발도상국, 개발억제국 사이의 관계를 재구성하고 있기 때문에, 과연 어떠한 비판적 관점이 점점 분열되는 동시에 하나로 수렴하는 이 지구상에서 다름을 받아들일 능력과 욕망을 조성할 수 있는지 묻는 것은 중요한 일이다. 어떠한 종류의 통찰력과 성찰이 있어야, 점점 더 차별화되는 사회에서 점점 더 불안해지는 개인들이 두려워하거나 적대감을 갖지 않고 편안하게 생소함에 다가서며 살아갈 수 있도록 실질적인 도움을 줄 수 있는지 알아야 한다. 같음과 다름을 가늠하는 잣대를 생산적으로 개조하여, 이방인의 생소함에 초점을 맞추지 않고 다른 차원에서 기본적인 같음을 인정하고 중요시하게 될 수는 없는지 고려해야 한다. 또한, 20세기 수난의 역사를 의도적으로 적용하는 것이 근본적인 공통성과 관련하여 타자성을 평화롭게 받아들이는데 어떤 도움을 줄 수 있을지 고려해야 한다. 특히, 피로 얼룩진 인종주의 현장에-그리고 그것이 고무하고 정당화한 식민정부의 독특한 성과에-더욱 정통하는 것이, 보다 일반적으로, 다문화적 사회관계라는 까다로운 현대 환경에 적용될 수 있는 교훈을 산출하게 할 방법을 질문해야 한다. 그러나 이러한 작업에 희생을 찬양한다거나 세계사적으로 부당함의 순위를 매기는 일이 포함돼서는 안된다. 그것은 어디까지나 피해자들의 소관인 것 같다. 위에서 언급한 손쉬운 작업들 대신 내가 제안하려는 것은, 다문화적 윤리학과 정치학이 우리가 누구나 서로에게 잘못을 저지를 수 있는 근본적인 약점을 가진 존재라는 논쟁적이고 현실적인 인간성을 전제로 성립할 수 있다는 것이다.
과거에, 서구의 근대성은 이러한 유토피아적 야망을 세계주의적이라고 설명했다. 말하자면, 인간은 서로 다르다기보다는 훨씬 더 닮아있으며, 대부분의 경우 우리는 서로 소통할 수 있고, 우리가 올바르게 행동하려고만 한다면 서로의 가치와 존엄, 근본적인 유사성에 대한 인식이 얼마든지 우리의 행동방식을 제약할 수 있다는 단순한 이상은 최근까지도 부끄러운 게 아니었다. 현재는 한물간 것으로 여겨지는 이러한 생각을 담은 대화와 성찰의 패턴은 근대 의식이 출현했던, 희미한 역사의 한구석까지 거슬러 올라갈 것으로 보인다. 근대 시기에 대한 제국의 중요성에 관한 한, 우리는 이러한 생각이 유럽인들의 새로운 영토 확장에 휘말리면서 시험당했고, 영토 확장의 결과인 제국령의 강화와 운영을 통해, 완전히 부정되지는 않았다 하더라도, 위태로워졌음을 기억해야 한다. 이러한 통찰은, 얄팍한 윤리적 가르침으로 바뀌어 거듭 시도됐으나, 20세기 야마적인 집단학살과 삶정치적 잔혹성에 의해, 가장 극심하게, 부적합함이 드러났다.
오늘날, 다름에 대해 열린 태도를 취하는 것은 구식이고, 뉴에이지적이며, 우스꽝스러운 자민족중심주의로 보인다. 우리는 다문화적이고 탈식민적인 관계를 위험이나 위기가 아닌 다른 어떤 것으로 개념화하지 못했기에, 20세기의 세계주의적 희망에 놓인 한계를 통렬히 인식하게 됐다. 그 같은 열망은, 그저 보편주의의 옷을 매력적으로 차려입은 또 하나의 제국주의적 개별주의가 아닌, 현실적인 비전을 생산하는 문제에 직면하여 좌절되기도 했다.
세계주의적이고 인본주의적인 욕구를 쉽게 포기한 것을 정치적 상상력의 실패로 해석하는 것이 좀 더 유익하다. 그러한 실수는 좌파의 패배 그리고 좌파의 운명과 얽혀있는 불찬성 사회운동의 후퇴와 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 그러한 운동은 민족국가와 시장이 서로 맞물려있는 시스템에 전념하지 않고 그것을 넘어서 국제주의의 형식을 추구했다. 예를 들어, 사회주의와 페미니즘은, 정치적 연대를 위해서는 지역을 초월해서 관계를 맺어야 한다고 봤기 때문에, 단순한 민족적 관점과 충돌하게 됐다. 그들은 이러한 움직임이 일어나게 하기 위해서, 정치문화의 원칙으로서 민족국가가 당연하게 여겨지는 상황을 깨뜨려야 했다. 그 과정에서, 그들은 가까이에 있어도 정치적 경제적 이해관계가 자기들과 상충하는 사람들에게 반감을 키웠다. 이러한 거리감은 양쪽 모두의 세계관에서 대담하고 분명하게 표현됐다. 여성도 노동자도 국가에 헌신하지 않았다. 그들은 더 큰 의미의 충성심을 찾았기 때문에 민족국가에 대한 애국심에서 등을 돌렸다. 그들의 임무는 상호연겱ㅘ 연대의 새로운 네트워크를 만들어 국경을 넘어 반향을 일으키고, 거리를 초월하고, 여타 문화적 경제적 장애물도 뛰어넘을 수 있게 하는 것이었다. 그 희망은 현존했던 국제주의 시대에 스러져갔다. 국제주의는 세계주의적 초지역적 제휴를 의심쩍어 했으며, 제한적인 인권담론이나 응급의료법, 환경재난법 말고는 사실상 그런 제휴를 상상도 할 수 없는 비뚤어진 정치적 환경을 만들어냈다.
연대에 대한 이러한 제약이 비인간성에 관한 비평과학으로 탈바꿈하는데 저항하여 사실상 무효화되지 않는다면, 인문학이 무사안일주의에 빠지게 된 감각과 연결될 수 있을 것이다. 이는 또한 윤리적이고 정치적인 성찰을 위한 수단으로서 철학적 인류학의 한계와 연결된다. 그리고 보다 광범위한 곤경과도 연관된다. 앞서 말했듯, 다름과 더불어 즐겁게 살아가고자 하는 욕망은, 한편으로는 세계적 불평등의 심화와 자원을 둘러싼 분쟁들, 그리고 다른 한편으로는 일상적이고 거의 진부해진 다문화에 직면하여, 순진하거나 하찮거나 부적절한 것으로 여겨질 수 있다.
이 모든 난관은 그 모두에 영향을 끼치고 있는 인종의 정치학에 주의를 기울이기를 거부하는 것을 통해 검토될 수 있다. 인본주의도 반(反)인본주의도, 역사와 사회를 이해하는 그들만의 방식으로 인종에 대한 생각과 인종적 위계질서의 파괴적인 영향을 언급해달라는 요청을 받았을 때, 편안해하지도 열의를 보이지도 않았다. 문화개념을 단순화하거나 도구화하거나 경시함으로써 악용했을 때, 특히 지나치게 확고하거나 전적으로 민족적인 현상으로 손쉽게 귀화되는 정체성 및 소속감을 동반하게 되면, 문제는 증폭된다. 문화와 정체성이 쉽게 구체화되지 않도록, 따라서 이렇게 악용되지 않도록 접근법을 재조정하는 것은 다문화주의를 되살려내고 정치화하려는 장기적 목표와도 양립할 수 있는 훌륭한 단기적 야망인 것 같다. 사실상, 그러기 위해서는 현재 유행 중인 절대적인 민족적 인종적 차이에 대한 값싼 호소를 단념해야 하므로, 두 배로 환영받을 만한 일이다.
습관적으로 문화를 차이를 좁힐 수 없는 부분이라고 생각하는 것은 주의깊게 해석될 필요가 있다. 그것은 대개 방어적인 제스처였으며, 소수자나 다수자나 마찬가지로 “인종”과 민족성이라는 공허한 확신이 자아의 일관성과 통합감에 가해진 포스트모더니즘의 다양한 공격으로부터 유일한 보호를 제공해줄 거라고 잘못 생각했을 때 그런 제스처를 취했다. 우리는 이제 기계적인 문화의 철칙에 따라 우리의 위태롭고 지속적으로 불안한 정체성을 함께 뭉치기 위해서 우리 자신을 설득할 운명에 처한 것처럼 보인다. 그러한 상황에서는, 인종적 차이와 인종적 위계가 안정화하는 힘으로 자발적으로 나타나는 것처럼 보이게 할 수 있다. 그것들은 점점 더 적대적으로 변하고 고독해지는 사회를 그 자리에 묶어두고 험한 환경 속에서 각자의 위치를 확보할 생생하고 자연스러운 수단을 제공할지도 모른다. 인종, 국적, 민족성은 불변한다고 받아들이면, ‘나는 누구이며, 내가 있을 곳은 어디인가’에 관한 확신을 잃어버리면서 생겨난 불안이 줄어든다. 따라서 사회적 삶의 혼란스러운 복잡성은 마니교적 환상으로 재구성된다. 그 안에서 신체는 순서가 매겨진 예측가능한 단위로서, 접근할 수 없는 게놈 내부에 새겨진 심오한 문화생물학의 법칙에 따른다. 자연과 문화의 논리가 한데 모아졌으며, 그것들이 동일한 결정론적 목소리를 내도록 보장하는 것은 그 무엇보다도 인종의 힘이다.

Source text - Korean 피동과 능동이 합작하는 회화: 써니킴의 그림, 실천, 방법에 관한 미학 담론

1. 즐거움
회화처럼 역사가 오래된 예술일수록 사람들은 진보적이기보다는 보수적인 입장을 취한다. 그런 이들의 감각과 인식 속에 레오나르도 다빈치의 모든 그림은 무조건 좋고 명작이다. 반면, 21세기 현대미술가가 실험적으로 그린 회화는 언제나 이미 미성숙하고 난삽한 것으로 판단된다. 예술에 대한 관념 또한 파격적인 해석을 담은 새로운 미학보다는 관습적으로 통용되어온 논리, 개념, 이론적 내러티브를 선호하는 경향이 크다. 가령 일반인들 사이에서 미술사의 화가들은 모두 ‘천재’라는 이름으로 불린다. 그리고 사람들은 천재인 그들(거의 전적으로 유럽, 백인, 남성)이 그 단어에 담긴 뜻처럼 ‘하늘이 내린 재능’ 덕분에 뮤즈로부터 영감을 받아 위대한 작품을 창조했다는 신화를 기꺼이 받아들인다. 아무리 세월이 흐르고 인간 이성이 쌓아올린 문화가 빛을 발하더라도 그렇게 생각하고 싶은 것이다.
피카소가 “모던 회화에서의 연구라는 말” 대신 자신은 “발견”을 중시한다고 한 발언을 거듭 회자하고, 고흐는 자신의 천재성에 고통받았기에 그런 엄청난 그림들을 그릴 수 있었을 것이라 믿는 식이다. 바스키아의 낙서화가 그토록 자유분방하고 묘한 에너지를 품은 것은 소수자의 외관을 한 (거리의) 천사가 작가의 내면에 불어넣은 영감 덕분이라는 등등 말이다. 천재, 재능, 뮤즈, 영감에 의한 비밀스런 창조 같은 개념이 거의 19세기 독일 낭만주의의 영향 아래 정리된 특정 관점의 미학적 주장이라는 점은 개의치 않고서.
그런 사람들에게는 좀 충격적이고 과격한 예술/뮤즈론이 있다. 아리스토텔레스가 『정치학』에서 전개한 논리다. 그는 바쿠스 축제에서 주신(酒神) 바쿠스를 만족시키기 위해 노래하고 연주하느라 손과 입이 바쁜 뮤즈의 모습을 “고객의 음경(physis)을 부풀리고 아랫배에 닿을 정도로 세워 사정에 이르게 하는 창녀”같다고 서술했다. 파스칼 키냐르(Pascal Quignard)가 비판적 현대 음악 미학서라 할 『음악 혐오』에서 고대 희랍 철학자의 그 같은 견해를 소개하고 있다. 인용을 통해 키냐르는 작품창작이 자유로운 예술가의 능동적 행위만은 아니라는 점, 창작 행위의 모든 것이 “어딘가에 매여 있다”는 점을 설명하고 싶어한다. 키냐르에 따르면 그 매여 있음이 곧 “슬픔에 사로잡히는 것”을 의미하며, 모든 예술가의 기억/영혼과 작품들에 슬픔의 구속은 “술독 바닥의 찌기”처럼 가라앉아 있다. 앞서 예술/예술가에 대한 오래된 믿음과 신화적 서사를 간직하고 싶은 이들에게 아리스토텔레스의 뮤즈론은 환상을 깨는 선정적 비유일 것이다. 그리고 키냐르의 창작론은 뭔가 답답하게 읽힐 것이다. 예술 창작의 자유, 감상자의 미적 향유(aesthetic pleasure), 그 모든 즐거움을 두고 하필 슬픔에 옥죄인 찌꺼기라니……
2. 스케치
이제 써니킴의 미술을 논하려고 한다. 하지만 그에 대한 나의 비평은 이미 시작되었다고 해도 좋을 것이다. 우리가 이 글에서 초점을 맞추고 가능하다면 깊게 탐구하고자 하는 논제가 바로 ‘가장 오래된 예술’ 중 하나인 ‘회화’를 써니킴이라는 작가가 지금 여기서 행하는 문제기 때문이다. 그리고 그녀의 창작과정에 내재한 방법론, 뮤즈의 영감 같은 거창한 후원은 고사하고 지금 그리고 있는 그림이 성공하리라는 작은 보장도 없이/없지만 어둡고 불확실한 걸음에 걸음을 더하고 더해 작품을 완성해가는 그 길에 관해 논할 것이기 때문이다. 이 같은 논제는 비단 써니킴에게만 해당되지 않을 수 있다. 거의 모든 동시대 예술가를 대상으로 논할 수 있을지 모른다. 한편으로 그렇게 예술의 보편적 문제라는 점에서 여기 우리의 비평이 초점을 맞출 가치가 있다. 하지만 써니킴이 2012년을 기점으로 집중적으로, 그러나 자신의 페이스로 천천히 수행해가고 있는 회화의 과제는 오로지 써니킴만의 방식과 결과로 이어진다. 보편성으로 용해되지 않는 개별성을 갖고 있다는 의미다.
이 글의 목적과 의도가 여기 있다. 요컨대 본문에서 나는 써니킴이 최근 5년 사이(왜 시간을 나누는지는 나중에 알게 될 것이다), 회화를 중심으로 작업하고 있는(왜 간단히 ‘그림을 그렸다’로 명시하지 않고 해석의 여지를 남기는지도 차차 드러날 것이다) 내용 및 그 과정/결과로서 작품을 미학적으로 분석하고자 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 우리는 관습화된 예술 관념의 프레임 바깥에서 작업하고 있는 한 명의 작가가 컨템포러리 페인팅 작업을 통해 성취하고 있는 것과 그 창작의 여정 및 방법론에 관해 이해해볼 것이다. 미리 말하건대 거기서는 초월적 천재성이 아니라 작업 주체의 경험적이고 수행적인 질문과 회의(doubt)가 핵심이다. 또한 화가의 정수리든 손끝이든에 깃드는 뮤즈의 영감 대신 현실적 노고의 제작 행위, 창작의 완벽한 자유 대신 그것을 막는 비가시적인 힘들의 구속, 그에 맞서면서 또한 조응하는 작가의 부단한 시도가 관건이다.

Translation - English Painting as an Active-Passive Collaboration: An aesthetic Discourse on Sunny Kim’s Paintings, Practices, and Ways

1. Pleasure
People’s attitude towards art tends to be more conservative than progressive. This is especially true when it comes to painting, with its long history and ingrained values. For the majority of people, any paintings by Leonardo da Vinci is automatically a masterpiece, by default. On the other hand, most experimental paintings by contemporary artists are presumed to be immature and incomplete. Likewise, with regards to artistic theories and concepts, people tend to latch onto widely circulated ideas and narratives, eschewing more eccentric interpretations. Thus, every artist who has gained an exalted place in art history is labled a “genius.” Then, as implied by the definition of the word “genius,” we embrace the myth that the great artists (almost all of whom are white, European, males) created their masterpieces through some combination of superior talent and the divine intervention of the muse. No matter how much time passes, or human reason advances, or culture flourishes, people still want to believe in these myths. It reminds one of Picasso’s comment that he focused on “finding” rather than “research relating to modern painting,” which was long remembered,” and we love to believe that Van Gogh had to suffer in order to create his incredible works. We love to suggest that the liberating energy of Basquiat’s graffiti is the result of his unique artistic spirit as a minority artist who was inspired by the street. In perpetuating these myths, however, we never stop to consider that such concept – genius, talent, the muse, and the secret creation of divine inspiration – are merely aesthetic claims from a certain perspective, primarily compiled under the influence of nineteenth-century German Romanticism.
Many people would be surprised to learn of a more radical theory about the muse, first put forth by Aristotle in Politics and reintroduced by Pascal Quignard in La Haine de la Musique (The Hatred of Music), his argument for an aesthetic critique of music. According to Quignard, Aristotle suggested that, while singing or playing an instrument, the mouth and hands of the muse “are occupied exactly like those of a prostitute who, with her lips and fingers, inflates her client’s physis in order to make it stand below his belly until he ejaculates.” Thus, Quignard suggests that the creation of an artwork is not necessarily the free and independent act of an artist, but is rather bound to something, somewhere. According to Quignard, this binding is the state of “being captivated by sorrow.” Moreover, as memories are accumulated, this captivation by sorrow sinks and collects at the bottom of the artist’s soul – and in the artist’s works – like dregs at the bottom of a vat of wine. However, while Aristotle’s sensual analogy may shatter some of the illusions that people harbor about the mythical status of the artist, most will find Quignard’s theory somewhat stifling. After all, of all the words or images that he could have chosen, Quignard asserted that artistic creation and the aesthetic pleasure of a viewer were simply “dregs” ensnared by sadness.
2. Sketch
Now turning to Sunny Kim’s artwork, one may consider my critical analysis to have already begun since my focus – and if possible, to delve into at depth – is Kim’s concentration on “painting” practices, on of the oldest art forms. When making a painting, Kim engages in a series of blind steps, never knowing if the end result will be successful. However, this process does not reflect her adherence to a grand methodology or her dependence on inspiration from the muse. To some degree, of course, this description may be applied to any contemporary artist. As such, it may be discussed as an issue that is universal to contemporary art, but it is particularly crucial for an effective analysis of Kim’s work. Since 2012, Sunny Kim has intensively and methodically focused on creating paintings at her own pace, which has allowed her to find her won path and results. Through this process, Kim has been able to create paintings that resonate with an individuality that cannot be absorbed by the universal.
Here exist the purpose and intent of this essay. In order to fully explore this process, this article focuses on Kim’s work from the past five years (I will discuss later why I separate this time period). Moreover, rather than simply discussing Kim’s “paintings” per se, I wish to discuss her overall work, which has been focused primarily – but not exclusively – on painting. In this way, we can better understand her creative trajectory and methodology, as well as what she hopes to achieve through the work of painting, as an artist operating outside the frame of conventional ideologies of art. Rather than manifesting the transcendental “genius” of the artist, Kim’s works express her experiential and performative questions and doubts as a working subject. Rather than being inspired or produced by a divine muse dwelling in her head or her fingertips, her works are the tangible result of a laborious process. Rather than embodying the perfect freedom of creation, her works represent the constraints of invisible forces, as well as the artist’s incessant attempts to strain against or comply with those constraints.
