This, the 14th year of the Absa Cape Epic, starts with the prologue in Meerendal before traveling to Hermanus for the first two stages, Elandskloof near Greyton hosts the middle of the race and then its on to Oakvalley Wine estate in Elgin for 3 nights before the grand finale in Val de Vie near Paarl
It's a fantastic combination of riding terrain covering almost 700 kilometers and climbing 15,400 meters.

Just a stones throw from Cape Town, Meerendal Wine Estate is one of the oldest wine producers in South Africa and has hosted the prologue or grand finale for the past 5 years. This year it’s the 26-kilometer prologue course of Durbanville single-track.

The first two stages of the 2017 Absa Cape Epic start in the legendary Whale watching town of Hermanus - Originally an old fishing village, Hermanus is a fantastic location to watch the southern right whale from the towns cliffs, they return to Walker bay every year to calf during the winter months.

Stage 1 is a tough start with the riders crossing the Klein River Mountains over the old "Haarkappers (Haircutters) route" its 101 kilometers with 2300 meters of climbing returning to Hermanus.

Sauser and Kulhavy push to the front on the legendary barbers cut route climb and extend their lead over the brow, they are keen to make up some time after the prologue. Early cracks start to appear in Bulls with Huber pulling along a struggling Platt,
Kulhavy leads at a blistering pace but gets caught up in the rocks and breaks the valve his front wheel.
Cannondale surge past and as always Sauser is the one to do the repairs as the back up team are not close to hand.
Shurter and Stirnemann also overtake Investec Songo and make a bolt for the line.

There is a decisive split in the field as Cannondale, Scott and Pyga in the red Absa-African special Jersey make a move, Sauser and Kulhavy and Kansi Plascon are caught on the back foot and have to chase back.

They’re also here to help and reduce gaps, or to support us as they did during the last two days when we were in front and they helped us to extend our lead."

The 2017 Absa Cape Epic was an incredible 8 days of world class racing with a powerful mix of youth and experience. With the temperatures soring in the early stages and autumn falling at the end the wild and untamed trails of the Western Cape provided the perfect backdrop for the world's premier mountain bike stage race.

Tento, již čtrnáctý ročník Absa Cape Epic, začíná prologem v Meerendalu, pokračuje cestou do Hermanusu přes první dvě etapy, prostředek soutěže se koná v Elandskloofu poblíž Greytonu, pak se závodníci pojedou k Oakvalley Wine Estate v Elginu po tři noci před velkým finále v Val de Vie poblíž Paarlu. Je to fantastická kombinace různých terénů čítající skoro 700 kilometrů a 15,400 metrů stoupání.

Co by kamenem dohodil od Kapského města, Meerendal Wine Estate je jedním z nejstarších producentů vína v Jižní Africe a hostoval Prolog či velké finále posledních pět let. Tento rok to je 26-kilometrový prolog singltraku v Durbanville.

Lakata zatím vyhrál téměř všechny závody na horských kolech kromě Absa Cape Epic, který mu stále unikal, ze sedmi úspěšně dojetých zápasů bylo jeho nejlepším výsledkem druhé místo.
Dojeli za jednu hodinu a 7 minut, se ztrátou 5:20.

První dvě etapy Absa cape Epic 2017 začínají ve městě Hermanus, legendárním pro pozorování velryb. Původně to byla stará rybářská vesnice, Hermanus je úžasné místo pro pozorování velryb jižních z útesů města, vrací se do Walker Bay každý rok během zimních měsíců, aby porodily mladé.

První etapa je těžkých začátkem, jezdci projedou skrz Klein River Mountains přes starou “stezku Haarkappers(haircutters)”, která má 101 kilometrů s 2300 metrů stoupání, aby se vrátili zpět do Hermanusu.

A už jsou na cestě, první etapa je proslulá jako těžký den a je uspořádána tak, aby oddělila skupiny, je to první šance pro jezdce, aby se přesvědčili o formě ostatních závodníků a synchronizovali se se svými partnery.

Sauser a Kulhavý se tlačí dopředu na legendárním výstupu Barber’s Cut a zvyšují svůj náskok v čele, chtějí nahnat nějaký čas ztracený na prologu. Začínají se objevovat první oslabení v Bulls, jak Huber jede s Plattem, který má problémy.
Kulhavý vede žhavým tempem, ale zachytí se o kameny a rozbije ventil na svém předním kole.
Cannondale proklouznou okolo nich a jako vždy je to Sauser, který zařizuje opravy, neboť náhradní tým není nikde v blízkosti.
Shurter a Stirnemann také předjedou Investec Songo a řítí se k cíli.

Cannondale Factory racing si získávají vítězství a prohlubují svůj náskok v celkových výsledcích na 2:41 před Investec Songo Specialized. Sauser a Kulhavý projíždějí cílem sklíčení, že ztratili další minutu v celkových výsledcích a Scott Sram Racing jsou skoro pět a půl minuty pozadu.

Mezi prvními třemi týmy je jen něco přes pět minut a to ještě nejsme ani v půlce závodu, v sázce je mnohé.
Bulls určují tempo na konci prudkého konce, Kulhavý má problémy s kolech, ale vmžiku si s nimi poradí a ztrácí jen dvě místa v řadě.

Proto potřebujeme postavit tým a mít opravdu silná dvě dua. Vždycky byli s námi, když jsme je potřebovali. A i když jsme je nepotřebovali, dali nám pocit bezpečí. Když jsme píchli pneumatiku, mohli jsme si prohodit kola. Jsou tady také aby pomohli a změnšovali mezery, a pomáhali nám jako to dělali poslední dva dny, když jsme byly vpředu a pomohli nám zvýšit náš náskok.”

Se svými 103 kilometry to není nejdelší etapa, ale má nejvíce stoupání a její terén je velice náročný, tohle může rozhodnout celý závod!

“Dělali jsme všechno proto, abychom se vrátili na první místa. Bylo velice větrno a jeli jsme se skupinou, co byla 45 sekund pozadu. Ale po sedmi dnech hraje roli i psychika. Guys ujeli a my najednou byli dvě nebo tři minuty pozadu. To nám to docela ztížilo.”

Guys na to opravdu šlápli, museli jsme jen vydržet, držet se s nimi nebylo jednoduché a nakonec v poslední pětce s Ninem a ostatními jsem začal cítit hypoglykemii, naštěstí Leonardo pro mě měl nějaké gely a džusy, co mě udrželi při síle a pomohli mi projet cílovou čarou.

Trek Selle San Marco konečně získávají vytoužené místo na pódiu... a žlutí v lídrovském trikotu, Scott Sram MTB Racing si berou třetí místo a zapečeťují tak své vítězství Absa Cape Epic 2017. Nino Shurter a Matthias Stirneman si ke svým vítězstvím mohou připsat titul světově nejlepších závodníků na horských kolech.

Investec Songo Specialized přejíždějí cílovou čáru jako šestí a zajišťují si tak druhé místo v celkových výsledcích. Skvělý výsledek pro Sausera, který se vrátil z odpočinku.

Shurter a Stirnemann se stávají desátým týmem, který vyhrál Absa Cape Epic za posledních 14 let a zvyšují svůj náskok nad Sauserem a Kulhavým o 8 minut. Silný poslední den dostal na pódium Rohrbacha a Geisymayra, kteří předhonili Kansai Plascon o pouhých 58 sekund.
Fumic a Avancini, lídři v prvních čtyřech etapách, se museli spokojit s pátým místem a Lakata s Hynkem s osmým.

Absa Cape Epic 2017 byl úžasných 8 sní závodění světových rozměrů se silnou kombinací mládí a zkušeností. Se spalujícími teplotami na začátku a podzimními dešti na konci, divoké a nezkrotné tratě Západního Kapska poskytly perfektní pozadí pro závod na horských kolech světového měřítka.
