Inhaltliche Konzeption
Das nächste wissenschaftliche Symposium zum Umweltpreis wird sich ein Jahr nach dem Klimaabkommen von Paris mit der internationalen und nationalen Umsetzung von Konzepten und Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz beschäftigen.
Im Jahr 2015 erhielten die beiden Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitsforscher Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif (Leiter des Forschungsbereiches Ozeanzirkulation und Klimadynamik) und Prof. Dr. Johan Rockström (Direktor Stockholm Resilience Center) den Deutschen Umweltpreis. Latif wurde für seine Kommunikationsleistung im Bereich des Klimawandels ausgezeichnet, Rockström als Mitbegründer der Idee der planetaren Leitplanken (Synonym: planetare Grenzen). Der Klimawandel wird als einer der beiden bedeutendsten Faktoren der planetaren Leitplanken hervorgehoben, der bereits den Schwellenwert vom sicheren Bereich überschritten hat und sich dem System destabilisierenden Kipppunkt nähert. Mit Überschreiten der Grenzen wächst die Gefahr unumkehrbarer Umweltveränderungen, die die Bewohnbarkeit der Erde für die Menschen einschränken würden. Auf der Klimakonferenz in Paris wurde im Dezember 2015 die 2-Grad-Obergrenze in einem völkerrechtlichen Abkommen verankert, welches am 22. April 2016 in New York unterzeichnet wurde. Das Abkommen verbindet die Obergrenze mit der konkreten Handlungsanweisung, dass in der zweiten Hälfte dieses Jahrhunderts die globale Treibhausgasneutralität erreicht ist.
Zunächst gibt ein Vertreter der Bundesregierung ein Jahr nach Paris einen Überblick über den Stand der Umsetzung der Klimarahmenkonvention, bevor die beiden Umweltpreisträger aus ihrer naturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive ihre Bewertung zum Klimaabkommen abgeben. Wo sehen sie die aktuell größte Herausforderungen und welche Szenarien erscheinen ihnen aufgrund der aktuellen Datenlage am wahrscheinlichsten? Anschließend erfolgt eine Einordnung und Bewertung des Abkommens aus wirtschafts- und gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Sicht.
Gemeinsam mit Vertretern aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft diskutieren die Umweltpreisträger, welche konkreten Maßnahmen international und national in den entsprechenden Bereichen in welchem Zeitfenster umgesetzt werden müssten, um das vorgegebene 2-Grad-Ziel zu erreichen. Sowohl Ökonomie, als auch Politik und die Gesellschaft tragen dabei Verantwortung.
• Die Stabilität des Klimasystems wird u.a. durch das kohlenstoffbasierte Wirtschaftsmodell gefährdet. Daher kommt der Ökonomie eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Erreichung des 2-Grad-Zieles bis 2020 zu. Die Ökonomie ist gefragt, Modelle zu finden und vor allem umzusetzen, die mit der 2-Grad-Leitplanke kompatibel sind.
• Die Politik muss den Rahmen vorgeben, damit Produktionsvorgänge und Lebensweisen nachhaltig umgestaltet werden und konsequent über nationale Grenzen hinweg eine Konsistenzstrategie gefahren wird. Gleichzeitig muss sie dafür sorgen, dass Wohlstand national und global gerecht verteilt werden, um stabile gesellschaftspolitische Bedingungen zu schaffen.
• Ein weiteres großes Potenzial zur Verringerung der CO2-Emmissionen liegt im Nutzerverhalten der Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Die täglichen Konsumentscheidungen beeinflussen die Ausrichtung der Märkte, der dazugehörige gesellschaftliche Diskurs prägt die Werte der Gesellschaft und die Denkrichtung der Politik. Systemisches Denken ist erforderlich, um das komplexe Problem des Klimawandels lösen zu können.

The Paris climate agreement – from document to implementation

Substantive Concept
One year after the Paris climate agreement, the upcoming scientific symposium on the occasion of the Environmental Prize will focus on the international and national implementation of concepts and measures for climate protection.
In 2015, the two climate- and sustainability researchers Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif (Director of the Research Area Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics) and Prof. Dr. Johan Rockström (Director of the Stockholm Resilience Center) were awarded the German Environmental Prize. Latif was recognized for his achievements in communications in the area of climate change, Rockström as co-founder of the idea of planetary barriers (synonym: planetary borders). Climate change is indicated as one of the two most significant factors in the planetary barriers concept, as it has already crossed the safety threshold and is nearing the “tipping point” at which it will destabilize the system. Across this border there is a growing danger of irreversible environmental changes, which would seriously limit the habitability of the earth for humanity. At the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015, the 2-degree upper limit was anchored in an international convention which was signed on 22 April 2016 in New York. The agreement binds this upper limit with the concrete directive that, in the second half of this century, global greenhouse gas neutrality is to be achieved.
First, a representative of the German federal government will give an overview of the status regarding the Climate Framework Convention’s implementation one year after Paris, before the two Environmental Prize Recipients deliver their assessments of the Climate Agreement from their scientific perspectives. Where do they see the greatest current challenges and which scenarios appear to them, based on the latest data, most probable? This will be followed by a classification and evaluation of the agreement from the economic and socioscientific viewpoints.
Together with representatives from business, politics and the social sphere, the Environmental Prize Recipients will discuss which concrete measures must be put in place internationally and nationally in the corresponding areas, and in which timeframe, in order to reach the prescribed 2-degree goal. Responsibility for this process is shared by the business world, the political powers that be, and society itself.
• The stability of the climate system is endangered by, among other factors, the carbon-based economic model. Here the Economic Sphere plays a decisive role in reaching the 2-degree goal by 2020. Business is challenged to find, and above all implement, models which are compatible with the 2-degree barrier.
• The Political World must provide the framework for the sustainable transformation of production processes and lifestyles, and must see to it that a consequent consistence strategy, across national borders, is carried out. Simultaneously it must take steps to begin a just national and worldwide distribution of prosperity, in order to create stable sociopolitical conditions conducive to this transformation.
• A further great potential for the reduction of CO2 emissions lies with the “user behavior” of citizens. Daily consumer decisions influence the orientation of the market; the corresponding social discourse and debate shapes society’s values and the direction of political thought. Systematic thinking is essential to finding solutions to the complex problem of climate change.

I am a native of Tennessee and for 40 years was mainly a singer and keyboard player. I worked as a backing musician with some big country, rock, and blues stars -- on tour and in TV and recording studios -- on both sides of the Atlantic, also a good bit solo and with bands of my own, before beginning to work as a translator here in Germany in 2012. I am now 66 years old.
I studied Medieval and Renaissance English Literature, Dramatic Arts (Acting), and Creative Writing at the University of Maryland in College Park, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts and Humanities in 1975.
I have lived for a total of 19 years in Germany, where my two multilingual daughters were born. Both are now grown, and are dual citizens of the USA and Germany.
I love nature and live in a small village in Swabia (Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany) which borders on a huge nature preserve, where I love to hike and hunt for wild edible mushrooms. I also read a lot of literature in both English (especially 19th-Century English) and German.
