Source text - English Adolescence is a transition phase and is characterized by various kinds of physical, psychological, and social changes. It is a phase of development and transformation from appearance of secondary sexual characteristics to sexual and reproductive maturity. During this phase of transition, adolescents face a number of challenges with regard to their sexual and reproductive health. At the individual level, early marriage, early and unsafe initiation into sexual activities and consequently early childbearing, limited knowledge about and access to contraception, unwanted pregnancies and lack of access to safe abortion services, exposure to sexually transmitted infections, and lack of autonomy and gender- based power imbalances exacerbate young people’s vulnerabilities. High risk of RTI/STI and HIV and AIDS increases reproductive and sexual health complication which can lead to higher maternal morbidity, mortality and infant mortality rate . At the family or household level, a range of socio-economic factors, such as lack of education and poverty, lack of family support, and limited communication between parents and adolescents on sexual and reproductive health related matters, are some of the major barrier in accessing their rights . Besides, gender-based violence, lack of information and choices, and lack of access to services are some of the other major barriers . Additionally, laws that aim to protect the young - like the prevention of early marriage, sexual harassment, rape, sex selection are not implemented to the full extent. Absence of such knowledge can have serious consequences in lives of adolescents and adults subsequently. In this context, it is important that adolescents have sufficient knowledge in order to make informed choices which impact their lives, particularly sexual and reproductive health related choices.
Considering the enormous adverse health consequences accompanying tobacco addiction, it is very important to develop preventive strategies to reduce tobacco consumption. Preventive strategies especially focused towards children and adolescents need to be initiated on emergent basis. Preventive approaches include spreading awareness about the actual hazards of tobacco in the community especially among the vulnerable children and adolescents, curbs on advertisement and promotional campaigns, early identification of the users and providing treatment.
