Hu1nan agency and perspective transformation
Sociologists tend to rhink of hun1an agency - that is, the capacity of individuals to
act independently and make their own free choices - in terms of external circurnstances
and structures. Giddens (1986) sees human beings as subject to forces beyond the ir
control or understanding, and able to actively work and reflect on them. In doing
this, people c hange the world and, in the process, themselves. Institu tions, social

1 came from the Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy) to South Africa to join the paratroopers
in October 1961. I was fortunate to have had Commandant Willem Louw, who
had earned the nickname 'Sir William', as my first Paratroop Commander. When I
submitted a paper to him advocating that 1 Para should be converted to an SAS-type
unit, he read it and obviously gave it some thought as subsequent events proved.
Sir William moved on into the rarefied atmosphere of higher command.
It was when he was a Brigadier, Commander of Northern Transvaal Command,
that I, still a lowly captain, was unexpectedly summoned from l Para to his
home in Voortrekkerhoogte where I first met a genuine SAS officer, who was
in fact the Commander of C Squadron (Rhodesia), 22 SAS. Old SAS hands
will appreciate the impact this officer made on a real plaasjapie, albeit an
ex-Royal Naval officer, when I was introduced to Major Dudley Coventry. My
immediate impression was that this man was a real 'toff', judging by his accent,
and possibly a disgraced member from the English aristocracy who had been
banned to the outer limits of the African bush to stay out of the hair of his
more genteel relations. He may even have come to Rhodesia via the French
Foreign Legion for all I knew.
Anyway, to my pleasant surprise, Sir William informed me that Coventry
was on a tour of South Africa to determine the best location for our own SAS type
unit at the behest of the then Chief of the Army. Obviously, things were
moving in the right direction. I gathered though that the Chief of the SADF
was dead against any so-called funnies and that he was, therefore, not in the
picture and would remain uninformed for the moment. Dudley travelled the
length and breadth of the count ry and came back with a glowing report about
Oudtshoorn. He returned to C Squadron, SAS and I went back to my severely
under-strength Bravo Company impatiently awaiting further developments.

In view of terrorist organizations resorting to kidnapping civilians as a mean to pressurize authorities into fulfilling their demands, cyberspace has been turned by such organizations into a bargaining chip. This trend came into light, for example, in the message of ''Abu Osama Al-Ansari'', leader of Anasur El-Muslimeen Group (Vanguards for the Protection of Muslims) which was released by "Alqabdwn al jamr Media Institution" in September 2013 " on internet international Jihad Forum. The message was directed at both the French and Nigerian governments regarding French hostage "Francis Collomp". Al ansari issued a warning to Nigeria and France, while “holding them accountable for whatever that might happen to Collomp if they continue to commit acts of violence, treachery, and challenging the commands of Allah'.
Kidnapping of "Chibok" school female students by Boko Haram in April 2014 is one of the important examples on how to pressurize the authority. Following the kidnapping, the organization released many videos on the conditions of the kidnapped girls linking their release to fulfilling their demands by the Nigerian government, foremost the release of Boko Haram imprisoned members. This is the reason why release of the girls was in stages - the girls were not all released in a single deal - but through several exchange agreements starting in October 2016. In addition, some reports indicated that Boko Haram received sums of money in return for releasing the girls.

Barak Obama’s performance at the end of his term in the white house was epitomized by a set of distinctive political actions; though, such actions considered in their totality as the outcome of an eight years endeavor
as president of the biggest country in the world. Such earmarks are apparent in dealing with issues of religious freedom, women rights, economic opportunities and common responsibility over nuclear weapons; in addition to his repeated persistence in continuing extensive efforts to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians; especially with view to ongoing normalization tracks between Israel and an increasing number of Arab countries. Obviously, effort by the American President constantly faced inflexibility by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. However, Obama dealt with Netanyahu forcefully and decisively, although he attempted at the beginning to approach Israel with the typical flexibility of former Presidents. Nevertheless, he concluded that Netanyahu himself is the enduring stumbling block; hence, he changed his tactic to achieve whatever he is seeking. While we perceive wars waged by Neoconservatives in Afghanistan and Iraq to have contributed to weakening of the United States and tarnishing its image in the eyes of the outside world, Obama has recently corrected such mistakes.

توليفة من الأعمال الفارقة في دنيا السياسة؛ مثلت مجمل أعمال بارك أوباما في آخر عهده بالبيت الأبيض؛ وإن كانت هي في مجملها تعد بمثابة النتيجة لمجهود ثماني سنوات كرئيس لأكبر دولة في العالم. العلامات الفارقة تبدو واضحة في ملفات التعامل مع الحرية الدينية وحقوق المرأة والفرص الاقتصادية والمسئولية المشتركة حيال السلاح النووي؛ وإصراره على الاستمرار بالجهود المُكثفة في مراتٍ متكرّرة للوصول إلى سلام بين الإسرائيليين والفلسطينيين؛ وخاصة إن مسارات التطبيع بين عدد متزايد من الدول العربية وإسرائيل مفتوحة. بالطبع جهد الرئيس الأمريكي اصطدم كثيرا بتعنّت رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو. ولكنه تعامل معه بكل قوة وحزم؛ رغم أنه في البداية حاول أوباما التعامل بمرونة الرؤساء السابقين مع إسرائيل. ولكنه وجد أن العثرة الدائمة هي نتنياهو في حد ذاته؛ فعدل من أسلوبه لتحقيق ما يريده. وبينما نرى أن الحروب التي شنّها المحافظون الجُدد في أفغانستان والعراق ساهمت في إضعاف الولايات المتحدة وتدهور صورتها أمام بقية العالم. نجد أن أوباما لملم مؤخرا تلك الأخطاء.
