Bio
I am an Arabic-English translator and editor (working in both languages, specialized in literary and social sciences translations), with three decades management experience in international development and relief work, managing programs in Arabic-speaking contexts, with Oxfam UK and Northern Ireland, Save the Children Fund UK, the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements and other international agencies working in the Arab world. In 1988 I was a founding member of the Arab Resource Collective, Ltd, a clearinghouse dedicated to the translation and production of teaching and learning materials in Arabic for community, human rights, development and relief workers throughout the Arab world. Until deciding to return stateside in October 2015, I was one of two full-time, in-house translators at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, in Doha, Qatar (2013-2015), a unique and dynamic research center working primarily in Arabic and hosting advanced level researchers from the entire Arab world, and using the entire range of Arabic dialects and registers of expression.

In addition to my work in translation and interpretation (consecutive) in the above contexts, I have a background in teaching Arabic at middle and high school and undergraduate levels in the USA, and provided consultancy services in teacher training and intensive Arabic learner programs (K-16) in the US nation-wide “STARTALK” program, and I am a certified Arabic-English community interpreter in the state of Maryland.

In 2012 I was a co-translator of the 'Arab Booker’ prize-winning novel, 'Throwing Sparks', by Saudi author Abdo Khal (Bloomsbury, 2014). I have also translated Lebanese author Hassan Daoud's 'Borrowed Time' (Telegram, 2006) and Palestinian author Mahmoud Shukair's short story 'Mordechai's Mustache' (Words Without Borders (Nov, 2006). Prior to joining ACRPS in September 2013 I was a Visiting Fellow at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I edited the English-language quarterly Islamic Civilisational Renewal, translating and publishing unique Arab perspectives on current affairs. Since 2012 have been pursuing an MA in Teaching Arabic as A Foreign Language, at the Middlebury College Arabic School, in order to enhance my capacities as a teacher, and translator. I look forward to translating Arabic novels, short stories and blogs now that I am back home - in Baltimore, Maryland.
