Afonso Henriques lutam contra os leoneses até ao reconhecimento da independência de Portugal por Afonso VII de Leão, através do Tratado de Zamora, assinado em 1143. Entretanto, continuam a luta contra os mouros, expandindo o território português para sul. Em 1180, dá-se a primeira batalha conhecida das forças navais de Portugal, quando uma esquadra portuguesa comandada por D. Fuas Roupinho derrota uma esquadra mulçumana ao largo do cabo Espichel.
Translation - English The history the Portuguese armed forces dates back to even prior to Portugal being established as an independent realm. The Portucalense County forces led by D. Alfonso Henriques, battled against the Leonese until 1143: when Alfonso VII, the Lion, signed the Zamorra treaty, recognizing Portugal as independent. However, war on the Moor and Saracens followed, expanding Portuguese territory further south. The first naval battle of the Portuguese armed forces took place in 1180, off Cape Espichel, when a fleet commanded by D. Fuas Roupinho defeated a Moorish fleet.
