Source text - German Wir liegen neun Kilometer hinter der Front. Gestern wurden wir abgelöst; jetzt haben wir den Magen voll weißer Bohnen und Rindfleisch und sind satt und zufrieden. Sogar für abends hat jeder noch ein Kochgeschirr voll fassen können; dazu gibt es außerdem doppelte Wurst- und Brotportionen—das schafft. So ein Fall ist schon lange nicht mehr dagewesen: der Küchenbulle mit seinem roten Tomatenkopf bietet das Essen direkt an; jedem, der vorbeikommt, winkt er mit seinem Löffel zu und füllt ihm einen kräftigen Schlag ein. Er ist ganz verzweifelt, weil er nicht weiß, wie er seine Gulaschkanone leerkriegen soll. Tjaden und Müller haben ein paar Waschschüsseln aufgetrieben und sie sich bis zum Rand gestrichen voll geben lassen, als Reserve. Tjaden macht das aus Freßsucht, Müller aus Vorsicht. Wo Tjaden es läßt, ist allen ein Rätsel. Er ist und bleibt ein magerer Hering.
Translation - English We are nine kilometres behind the front. Yesterday we were relieved; now we have bellies full of white beans and beef and are full and satisfied. For dinner we were even allowed to take another mess kit full, and there was a double portion of sausages and bread, to boot – that’ll just about do, I’d say. It’s been a long time since anything like this has happened: the cook with his carrot top is serving the food to us directly. Everyone that passes by is waved over with his spoon and served up a mighty dollop. He’s quite desperate, because he doesn’t know how he’s going to clear out that goulash cannon of his. Tjaden and Müller found a few washbowls and had them filled to the brim, as a reserve. Tjaden does it out of gluttony, Müller as a precaution. Where Tjaden puts it all is a mystery to everyone. He is and remains a beanpole.

Source text - German Der Geist, als Einstellung verstanden, hat, wie der Sprachgebrauch zeigt, unverkennbare Neigungen zur Personifikation: Der Geist Pestalozzis kann auch in konkretistischem Sinne dessen Geist, d. h. dessen imago oder Gespenst sein, so wie die Geister von Weimar die persönlichen Geister von Goethe und Schiller sein können, denn Geist heißt immer auch noch der Spuk, d. h. die Seele eines Verstorbenen. Der »kühle Geisterhauch« weist einerseits auf die Urverwandtschaft der ~ux~ mit ~uxpoc und ~uxoc, die beide kalt bedeuten, andererseits auf die ursprüngliche Bedeutung von 1weupa, welches nichts anderes als »bewegte Luft« bezeichnet, wie auch animus und anima mit avepoc (Wind) zu tun haben. Das deutsche Wort »Geist« hat wohl mehr mit Aufschäumendem und Aufbrausendem zu tun, weshalb einerseits eine Verwandtschaft mit Gischt, Gäscht, gheest, andererseits mit dem emotionalen aghast nicht von der Hand zu weisen ist. Die Emotion wird ja seit Urzeiten als Besessenheit aufgefaßt, und darum sagt man heute noch, von einem Jähzornigen z. B., er sei vom Teufel oder einem bösen Geist besessen oder geritten oder ein solcher sei in ihn gefahren. Wie die Totengeister und -seelen nach alter Anschauung von feinstofflicher Beschaffenheit gleich einem Lufthauch oder einem Rauch sind, bedeutet auch bei den Alchemisten der spiritus eine subtile, volatile, aktive und belebende Essenz, als welche z. B. der Alkohol verstanden wurde, sowie sämtliche Arcansubstanzen. Geist auf dieser Stufe ist Weingeist, Salmiakgeist, Ameisengeist usw.
Translation - English Understood as an attitude, geist has, as linguistic usage shows, a distinct proclivity toward personification: the geist or spirit of Pestalozzi can also be his geist in a concretistic sense, that is, his imago or ghost, just as the geists of Weimar can be the personal spirits of Goethe and Schiller; for geist can also mean ‘spectre’, the soul of a deceased. On the one hand, "kühle Geisterhauch” points to the ancient kinship of ψυχή with ψυχρδς and ψΰχος, both of which mean ‘cold’. On the other hand, it points to the original meaning of πνεΰμα, which means nothing other than "moving air", just as animus and anima have to do with άνεμος (‘wind’). The German word "geist" indeed has much to do with foaming and effervescence, which is why a relationship with gischt (‘spray’, ‘surf’), gäscht (‘guest’), and gheest (‘geest’, a coastal landform in Northern Germany and Denmark) is not to be dismissed out of hand – and even, aside from these, with the emotional aghast. Since time immemorial, emotion has been understood as a possession, and that is why it is still said today, let’s say for example of an irascible man, that he was possessed or ridden by the devil or an evil ‘geist’, or that one has entered into him. Just as the geists and souls of the dead are, according to ancient conceptions, like a breath of air or smoke, in the writings of alchemists, too, the spiritus was understood to have a subtle, volatile, active, and stimulating essence. This is how, for example, alcohol was understood, as well as all arcane substances. Geist, at this level, means alcohol, ammonia, ameisengeist, etc.
