Source text - Spanish En la actualidad vivimos un contexto de serio riesgo para los derechos sexuales y para los derechos reproductivos en todo el mundo. El auge de los fundamentalismos está teniendo un papel crucial tanto en América Latina y el Caribe como en Europa a la hora de limitar la autonomía de las mujeres sobre sus vidas y sobre sus cuerpos, con una oposición activa de grupos anti-elección contras las organizaciones que trabajan en este ámbito.
6 de los 8 países del mundo en los que el aborto está criminalizado sin restricciones están en América Latina y el Caribe (El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, República Dominicana, Haití y Surinam), 3 de ellos están en Centroamérica. En Honduras incluso está prohibida la píldora del día después. En Guatemala, el aborto está permitido solo si hay riesgo para la vida de la embarazada. Debido a esta falta de autonomía de las mujeres sobre sus cuerpos y sus vidas, la región cuenta con unas altas tasas de mortalidad materna. Según datos de la CEPAL correspondientes a 2013, esta tasa fue de 140 muertes maternas por cada 100.000 nacimientos en Guatemala, de 120 en Honduras, de 100 en Nicaragua y de 69 en El Salvador. Esta situación es aún peor en el caso de las mujeres adolescentes, ya que, de acuerdo con la Organización Mundial para la Salud, su riesgo de mortalidad materna se multiplica por cuatro. Y esto en una región con altas tasas de embarazos en niñas y adolescentes, muchos producto de violaciones. De hecho, en El Salvador, el suicidio es la segunda causa de muerte materna en las mujeres adolescentes. Precisamente en El Salvador hay mujeres encarceladas que enfrentan penas de entre 30 y 40 de prisión por delitos relacionados con el aborto. Estos países con marcos legales restrictivos, comparten además otras características como altos índices de violencia sexual, poco acceso a atención médica de calidad y métodos anticonceptivos modernos, y un marginal acceso a la justicia. En estos países, la agenda de DSDR es todavía una agenda marginal, casi siempre sólo impulsada por el movimiento feminista, y que no es considerada ni por los Estados ni por otros movimientos sociales como una agenda crítica para el desarrollo y la democracia. Adicionalmente, el contexto para el activismo no es favorable. Las organizaciones y activistas feministas que trabajan para exigir el respeto, apoyo y garantía del ejercicio de los derechos sexuales y reproductivos ven amenazada su seguridad.
Translation - English We currently live in a context of serious risk for sexual and reproductive rights around the world. The rise of extremism is having a crucial role in both Latin America and the Caribbean and Spain when it comes to limiting the autonomy women have over their lives and their bodies, which is particularly visible with the active opposition of anti-choice groups to the organisations that work in this field.
6 out of 8 of the countries in the world in which abortion is criminalised under all circumstances are in Latin America and the Caribbean (El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Suriname), 3 of which are in Central America. In Honduras, even the morning after pill is prohibited. In Guatemala, abortion is only allowed if pregnancy poses a risk to the pregnant woman’s life. The region also has a high maternal mortality rate due to the lack of autonomy that women in these countries have over their own bodies and lives. According to the ECLAC figures for 2013, the rate of maternal deaths per 100,000 births was 140 in Guatemala, 120 in Honduras, 100 in Nicaragua, and 69 in El Salvador.
This situation is even worse for adolescent women since, according to the World Health Organisation, their risk for maternal death is four times greater than that of adult women. This is pertinent as LAC is a region that has a high pregnancy rate among girls and adolescents, much of which is a result of the high incident of rape in the region. In fact, in El Salvador, suicide is the second cause of maternal death among adolescent women. Also in El Salvador, there are women that are in prison and who face convictions of 30 to 40 years for abortion-related crimes. The LAC countries with restrictive legal frames also share other similar characteristics, such as high rates of sexual violence, limited access to decent medical care and modern birth control methods, as well as a marginal access to justice. In these countries the sexual and reproductive rights agenda still remains marginal, almost always driven only by the feminist movement, and it is not usually considered to be of critical importance for development and democracy by states or by other social movements. Additionally, the context is not favourable for activism. Feminist organisations and activists that work to demand respect, support and the assurance of sexual and reproductive rights often have their safety threatened.

About me: I am a half-Spanish, half-American freelance Spanish <> English, Catalan <> English and Spanish <> Catalan translator who was raised in a trilingual household and educated in all three languages. I have over six years of professional language experience specialising in the social sciences, business and marketing, although I also have experience and can work in other fields.
I have studied and worked in Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, and in France and as such I have actively had to use all of these languages professionally and in my day-to-day life.
As an American I can easily work in American English, but I have lived, worked and studied in the UK for much longer than I have in the US, meaning I more frequently work with British English. I can translate from any variant of Spanish, but I prefer translating into Castilian Spanish.
