많은 사람이 희생된 전라남도 도청 자리는 지난 30여 년간 외부와 차단되어 있었다. 그러나 변화가 시작되었다. 논의를 거듭한 끝에 최근에 그 자리는 박물관과 광주항쟁을 기념하기위한 장소로 만들어지기 시작하였다.
이번 가을에 나는 그 곳을 방문해서 그 장소가 새롭게 바뀌기 전에 그 곳의 사진을 찍을 기회가 주어졌다. 다른 모든 적막한 장소에서 그렇듯이, 마치 뒤죽박죽된 시간의 어항 속에 있는 사물들처럼 보이는 붕괴된 건물사이로 먼지를 뒤집어 쓴 어떤 초월적인 기운이 그곳에 감돌았다. 결국 시간은 사람들이 만들어 낸 개념이고, 시간을 가늠할 필요가 없어졌을 때. 그 공간은 빛이나 어둠, 물과 먼지, 같은 기본적인 물리력이 감소되면서 원시적이 된다.
그 주변을 돌아보면서, 나는 그 곳을 주기적으로 되살아나게 하는 기운을 품고 있는 새집과, 이끼, 그리고 잡초들을 보았다. 누구인지 알 수 없는 시신 같은 벽시계, 점심 메뉴, 기둥에 붙여져 있는 종교적인 그림에는 사람들의 과거의 흔적도 남아있었다.
나는 35미리 필림 카메라로 그 공간을 담았으며, 작은 암실에서 수작업으로 그 이미지들을 현상하고 인쇄하였다. 그 사진들 중에서 120장을 선별하여 이 책을 만들었는데, 나는 이 사진들이 지금 셀 수 없이 많은 사람들이 누리고 있는 자유를 쟁취한 그 곳, 그러나 오랫동안 사람들에게 알려지지 않은 채로 방치되어있던 사건의 발생지를 들여다보는 창문의 역할을 하기 바란다.
이 사진들은 결코 기록을 담은 사진이 아니다. 나는 객관적인 사물로서 그 장소를 찍지 않았다. 그 대신 유기되어서 변화되고 있던 상태로서의 그 장소가 주는 기운을 사진에 담으려고 하였다. 나는 내가 원하는 이미지를 위하여 그 곳에 있는 어떤 사물도 인위적으로 변경하거나 옮기지 않았다. 그러나 한 세대동안 방치되어 있던 건물을 있는 그대로 보여주는 걸 넘어서, 나는 이 사진을 보는 사람들이 그곳의 역사적인 장소의 폐허에서 시적인 것을 볼 수 있기를 원한다. 축 늘어지고 찢어져 휘날리는 깃발이나, 깨어진 유리 창문과 벽에 찍힌 철거 노동자들의 지저분한 손자국등, 그곳의 구석구석에서는 상징적인 것들이 찾아진다. 그러나 나는 아직도 정확한 희생자의 숫자에 대해 의견의 일치를 보지 못하는 상황에서, 내가 이러한 장면들이 무엇을 나타내는지를 안다고 하는 것은 무리라는 걸 알고 있다. 그러한 이유로 나는 이러한 이미지를 해석하는 것은 온전히 사진을 감상하는 이들에게 맡기고자 한다.
Translation - English On May 18, 1980, citizens banded together in Gwangju City, in the province of Jeollanam-do, South Korea to protest the military dictatorship that at the time controlled the nation. The people flooded the city streets, ultimately taking control of the Provincial Government Offices, where the uprising culminated in a massacre of the civilian protesters by the national army. The estimates of the total number of dead range from 100 to 2,000, depending on the source. The uprising catalyzed many more demonstrations of public indignation that swept the nation over the next decade, which collectively succeeded in bringing nationwide reform and instating a democratic government which remains in power today.
More than thirty years after the atrocities, the site of the former Provincial Government Office has remained shuttered from the outside world. But change is coming: after much contentious debate, ground has recently been broken to construct a museum and memorial site.
This past autumn, I was given the opportunity to access the site and photograph its state before its impending rebirth. As in all deserted places, a feeling of dusty transcendence penetrated the air in those decaying structures, with objects seeming to hang suspended as if in a fishtank of muddled time. Time, afterall, is a human invention, and when vacated of the need to measure it, spaces become primordial, reduced to elemental forces like light and darkness, water and dust.
In my exploration, I saw that bird’s nests, moss, and wild plants have crept in, imbuing the space with a subtle sense of cyclical rebirth. Remnants of its human past also remain, corpse-like in their anonymity--a grandfather clock; a lunch menu; a religious picture pinned to a pillar.
I photographed the spaces with a 35mm film camera and developed and printed the images by hand in a small darkroom. A selection of 120 of those photographs have made it to the pages of this book, which I hope will serve as a window into the site of events which have wrought the freedom upon which the lives of countless individuals have been built, but has remained almost entirely unknown to human eyes for many years.
This collection of photographs is by no means to be taken as documentary photography. I did not seek to capture the place in objective terms; instead, I sought to capture the spirit of the place in its transient state of abandonment. There is literal truth in these images insomuch as none of the objects were moved or altered for the purpose of photographing them. But beyond literal representations of what a building abandoned for a generation looks like, I hope that those who see these photographs are able to see the poeticism in the decay of this historical landmark. Symbolism can be derived from almost any detail--in the flags that remain tattered and limp on site, in the cracked windows and in the muddy handprints left on the wall by demolition workers. But I believe it would be out of my place for me to pretend to know what to make of these scenes, when even a consensus on the exact figures of the number who’ve lost their lives here has yet to be reached. As such, I leave the interpretation of these images entirely to the viewer.
