Bio

I was educated in the United States and England and hold a native command of both the English and
Arabic languages. I have lived and worked for two decades in five different
continents—including 13 years in America, 3 years in England, and 2 years in
New Zealand. I received an MA in journalism and public affairs from the
American University in Washington, DC; a Postgraduate Certificate in
Arabic-English/English-Arabic translation studies from the University of
Westminster in London, England; and a BA in media communications from Webster
University in St. Louis, Missouri. I taught media studies and international
relations classes in the United States and New Zealand. I also served as a
supply (media studies) teacher in London in 2002.

Currently, I work as an independent researcher
and freelance Arabic-English translator from Cairo, Egypt, and have translated
and proofread a number of projects for distinguished international (American
and British) translation companies such as Wordbank, TVG Translegal, Inter-Com,
as well as the French DAT and the Malta-based International Translation Agency.
I also serve as a translator/language associate for the UK-based Vandu Language
Service. I provide reliable, high-quality Arabic-English translations and
revisions with emphasis in legal translation, government/politics,
journalism/media, education/pedagogy, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas,
environment, military, Islamic studies, art/literature, marketing, entertainment, and tourism.

I am the author of the three books: The Egyptian Press and Coverage of Local and International Events (Lanham, MD: Lexington
Books, 2010); The “Ugly American” in the Arab Mind: Why Do Arabs Resent
America? (Washington, DC: Potomac Books, 2011); and The Egyptian Revolution
Between Hope and Despair: Mubarak to Morsi (New York: Algora Publishing, 2013).
For each of the three books, I translated roughly between 30,000 to 40,000
words from the print and broadcast Arabic-language media. I also worked as an
independent journalist in the United States and published close to 100 articles
in major American newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, San
Francisco Chronicle, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Los Angeles Times, Dallas Morning
News, Editor & Publisher magazine, among others. For further information
about my background and published work, please visit my blog:
https://independent.academia.edu/ElBendary. My proz.com profile: https://www.proz.com/profile/1960126.

I can deliver quality translation of 2,000 - 3,000 words per day and I can use translation software such as SDL Trados and
Memsource Editor. My rate for translation is US$0.06 per English target word ($60
per 1000 words) and $25 per 1000 words (or $40 per hour) for
revision/proofreading. I charge $4.00 for direct translation/subtitling per
audio minute with time codes using Express Scribe Pro or Subtitle Edit.
