Source text - French Il est courant de considérer que les usages des médicaments se divisent en ‘bons usages’ et en ‘mésusages’, désignant respectivement ceux qui sont conformes aux recommandations médicales, et ceux qui relèvent de pratiques profanes inappropriées. L’anthropologie a montré combien il était nécessaire, pour comprendre ces pratiques, de ne pas les juger à l’aune du savoir médical, et de tenter de décrypter leur sens en les rapportant notamment à des systèmes de pensée ou à des représentations culturelles données. Les usages profanes ont leurs logiques propres, associées aux représentations que les individus ont des médicaments.
Translation - English It is commonly thought that medicinal uses can be divided into “good uses” and “misuses”, meaning, respectively, those conforming to medical recommendations, and those which fall into the category of inappropriate lay practices. In order to understand these practices, anthropology has shown the importance of not passing judgement in the light of medical knowledge, and of trying to decrypt their meaning, in particular by relating them to certain systems of thought or cultural representations. Lay medicinal uses follow their own logics, and are associated with how individuals perceive these medicines.
