Source text - English There is a wonderful story of a group of American car executives who went to Japan to see a Japanese assembly line. At the end of the line, the doors were put on the hinges, the same as in America. But something was missing. In the United States, a line worker would take a rubber mallet and tap the edges of the door to ensure that it fit perfectly. In Japan, that job didn't seem to exist. Confused, the American auto executives asked at what point they made sure the door fit perfectly. Their Japanese guide looked at them and smiled sheepishly. "We make sure it fits when we design it." In the Japanese auto plant, they didn't examine the problem and accumulate data to figure out the best solution—they engineered the outcome they wanted from the beginning. If they didn't achieve their desired outcome, they understood it was because of a decision they made at the start of the process.
At the end of the day, the doors on the American-made and Japanese-made cars appeared to fit when each rolled off the assembly line. Except the Japanese didn't need to employ someone to hammer doors, nor did they need to buy any mallets. More importantly, the Japanese doors are likely to last longer and maybe even be more structurally sound in an accident. All this for no other reason than they ensured the pieces fit from the start.
Translation - Czech Mám krásnou historku o skupině manažerů z americké automobilky, kteří se vypravili do Japonska podívat se na tamní montážní linku. Na konci linky se stejně jako v Americe nasazovaly dveře do závěsů. Ale něco tu bylo jinak. Ve Spojených státech dělník na závěr vždycky vzal gumovou paličku a poklepal na okraje dveří, aby správně zapadly. V Japonsku se něco takového vůbec nedělalo. Američané z toho byli zmatení a ptali se, kde se tedy zajišťuje, aby dveře správně seděly. Japonský průvodce se na ně podíval s ostýchavým úsměvem: „To zajišťujeme už při návrhu.“ V téhle japonské automobilce nezkoumali problém a neshromažďovali data, aby ho mohli co nejlépe vyřešit – výsledek, který chtěli, navrhovali hned od začátku ve fázi konstrukce. Pokud požadovaného výsledku nedosáhli, věděli, že je to kvůli nějakému rozhodnutí, které učinili na začátku tohoto procesu.
Když nakonec z linky sjížděly hotové vozy, seděly dveře správně jak u těch amerických, tak u těch japonských. Japonci ale na rozdíl od Američanů nepotřebovali zaměstnávat člověka, který by na ty dveře poklepával, ani k tomu nemuseli nakupovat paličky. A co je ještě důležitější, dveře japonské výroby pravděpodobně vydrží déle a možná jsou dokonce i odolnější v případě nehody. To vše jen díky tomu, že byla správná konstrukce zajištěna hned od začátku.

Ersetzte Teile werden Eigentum des Lieferanten und müssen dem Lieferanten zurückgeschickt werden. Der Lieferant trägt die in seinem Werk anfallenden Kosten der Nachbesserung.
Translation - Czech Dodavatel je povinen na písemnou žádost zákazníka co nejrychleji podle vlastní volby opravit nebo vyměnit veškeré součásti dodávky, které se před uplynutím záruční doby poškodí nebo přestanou být použitelnými vinou špatného materiálu, vadné konstrukce či nedokonalého provedení. Původní vyměňované součásti se stávají majetkem dodavatele a musí mu být zaslány zpět. Náklady na opravu, které vznikly v provozovně dodavatele, hradí dodavatel.

I am a native Czech speaker and have been working as a freelance English-Czech and German-Czech translator since 2005, specializing in technical documents. Technical manuals and material safety data sheets belong to my favourites. J In addition to always searching for the right terminology, I enjoy making my texts as natural-sounding and easy to read as possible (which is an often-neglected feature of technical manuals).
I have been translating books from German and English to Czech, including (among others) Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport and Lifespan by David Sinclair. Childrens' books and biographical novels are my passion as well, see e.g. here.
