This book is about a young man with learning disabilities who becomes very sad and needs help to feel better.
Sadness and depression
Everyone can feel sad at any time in their lives, this is normal. There are things that happen, that people say or do, things that we think about that can make us all feel unhappy for a time. There are lots of words that people use for feeling this way: sad, unhappy, miserable, feeling blue, feeling down or low. Although it is normal to feel this way, sometimes people may feel sad for longer than is usual and there may be other problems that come with this low mood.
When people are sad they find it difficult to see anything positive about their lives or their future. They may lose interest in doing things or may just not have the energy. They may cry a lot but they can also feel worried, unable to relax and irritable and impatient with others. For much of the time they may just feel empty, worthless or guilty. They can lose their appetite and have difficulty in sleeping properly; though some people sleep or eat more than usual. Sometimes people may have physical symptoms such as stomach aches, bowel problems, headaches or other pains in the body and these can be related to the sadness they are feeling. Feelings of anxiety or panic are also common in people who are feeling sad.

Todas las personas pueden sentirse tristes en algún momento de su vida, esto es normal. En ocasiones suceden cosas, la gente dice o hace algo, o pensamos cosas que nos hacen sentir infelices durante un tiempo. Hay muchas palabras que las personas utilizan cuando se sienten de esta manera: Triste, infeliz, miserable, melancólico, deprimido, o descontento. A pesar de que es normal sentirse de esta forma, algunas veces este estado se prolonga más tiempo de lo usual y puede que existan otros problemas que acompañen este sentimiento de descontento.
Cuando las personas están tristes les es difícil ver lo positivo en sus vidas o su futuro. Puede que pierdan interés en hacer cosas o puede que simplemente no tengan la energía necesaria. Puede que lloren mucho pero también puede que estén preocupadas, se sientan incapaces de relajarse, irritables e impacientes con los demás. La mayor parte del tiempo puede que simplemente se sientan vacías emocionalmente, que no valen nada o culpables. Puede que pierdan el apetito y tengan dificultad para dormir adecuadamente; aunque algunas personas duermen o comen más de lo habitual. En ocasiones puede que experimenten síntomas físicos como dolores de estómago, problemas intestinales, dolores de cabeza u otros dolores en el cuerpo lo cual puede estar relacionado con la tristeza que sienten. Sentimientos de ansiedad o pánico son también comunes en las personas que se sienten tristes.

Source text - English This session is an accompaniment to the IFHHRO publication ‘The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health: A Guide for Civil Society’. The session starts off with a short plenary TRUE/FALSE quiz to introduce participants to the work of the Special Rapporteur and the type of information that can be found in the IFHHRO Guide. This is followed by group work during which participants are asked to use the guide to determine how fictional civil society organizations could make use of the work of the Special Rapporteur. The outcome of the group work is summarized and discussed in plenary, giving the facilitator an opportunity to provide feedback and additional information.

• To learn how civil society can be involved in the work of the Special Rapporteur

The cases used for the session are meant for an international audience and can be adapted to the local context if needed.
