Czech to English: Introduction for the Czech European Space Agency website
Source text - Czech The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
ESA is an international organisation with 20 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.
What does ESA do?
ESA’s job is to draw up the European space programme and carry it through. ESA's programmes are designed to find out more about Earth, its immediate space environment, our Solar System and the Universe, as well as to develop satellite-based technologies and services, and to promote European industries. ESA also works closely with space organisations outside Europe.
Who belongs to ESA?
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Canada takes part in some projects under a Cooperation agreement. Poland exchanged Accession Agreements with ESA in September 2012 to become our 20th Member State.
Hungary, Estonia and Slovenia are ‘European Cooperating States’. Other countries have signed cooperation agreements with ESA.
Where is ESA located?
ESA's headquarters are in Paris which is where policies and programmes are decided. ESA also has sites in a number of European countries, each of which has different responsibilities:
EAC, the European Astronauts Centre in Cologne, Germany;
ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain;
ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany;
ESRIN, the ESA centre for Earth Observation, in Frascati, near Rome, Italy;
ESTEC, the European Space Research and Technology Centre, Noordwijk, the Netherlands.
A new ESA centre has opened in the United Kingdom, at Harwell, Oxfordshire. ESA also has liaison offices in Belgium, USA and Russia; a launch base in French Guiana and ground/tracking stations in various parts of the world.
Translation - English Evropská kosmická agentura (ESA) je branou Evropy do vesmíru. Zajišťuje, rozvíjí a koordinuje pro Evropu přístup ke kosmickým technologiím a aplikacím. Usiluje o to, aby vesmír přinášel užitek nejen Evropanům, ale lidem na celém světě.
ESA je mezinárodní organizace, kterou v současnosti tvoří 19 členských států. Spolupráce, spojení finančních prostředků i know how odborníků z jednotlivých zemí umožňuje ESA dosáhnout cílů, které by pro jednotlivé evropské státy byly zcela mimo jejich možnosti
Co ESA dělá?
Úkolem ESA je navrhovat a realizovat Evropský kosmický program. Cílem projektů a programů ESA je prohloubit znalosti o naší planetě, jejím bezprostředním okolí, Sluneční soustavě i dalekém vesmíru. Stejně tak ESA vyvíjí satelitní technologie a služby, a podporuje evropský průmysl. ESA úzce spolupracuje s kosmickými agenturami a organizemi mimo Evropu.
Kdo jsou členové ESA?
Rakousko, Belgie, Česká republika, Dánsko, Finsko, Francie, Německo, Řecko, Irsko, Itálie, Lucembursko, Nizozemsko, Norsko, Portugalsko, Rumunsko, Španělsko, Švédsko, Švýcarsko a Velká Británie jsou současní členové ESA.
EAC, Evropské středisko astronautů v německém Kolíně;
ESAC, Evropské středisko kosmické astronomie ve španělském Villanueva de la Canada poblíž Madridu;
ESOC, Evropské středisko kosmických operací v německém Darmstadtu;
ESRIN, Středisko ESA pro sledování Země v italském Frascati nedaleko Říma;
ESTEC, Evropské kosmické výzkumné a technologické středisko v nizozemském Noordwijku.

Experience
Years of experience: 17. Registered at ProZ.com: Dec 2012.
Communications and public relations professional, journalist and Czech/English translator and interpreter currently living in London. Native speaker of the the Czech language with exceptional writing skills. I always seek to explore creative ways when it comes to language and words as I believe that a well written text is a key to achieving the communication target. Saying that, the specific audience is also always on my mind, as without knowing for whom you are writing, you can hardly meet the target
My experience in translating and interpreting
Recently, I started cooperating with an interpreting agency The Silent Sounds as a Czech/Slovak - English interpreter in the healthcare sector in the area of London.
Even though "translator" has never been my exact job title, I performed a lot of translation work during my six year cooperation with the Czech Public Service Television. Adapting and translating international news feed and TV programs into the Czech language, always with the specific audience in mind, I did translation work on daily basis. During a three month internship in the European Space Agency I helped to develop the Czech version of the European Space Agency website. This work included translating PR texts and topical articles from ESA's main web portal.
My specialties
Any public relations and marketing materials that require creative approach, and accurate and culturally appropriate translation. As I am also an active science and space journalist in both Czech and English language, I feel confident translating most semi-specialist articles from various scientific disciplines. Travel and tourism promotional materials and guides, cultural heritage and history topics are also within my area of interest.
My education
I have a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Media Communication from the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, Master's in Theory of Art and Culture from the same university, both passed with grade A. Apart from that I have also a Master's in Science from the International Space University in Strasbourg, France. Though in a French speaking country, the language of my studies was English. I also hold the Certificate in Proficiency in English for speakers of other languages, the highest certification provided by the University of Cambridge.
