I have spent my whole life, since early childhood, interpreting between English and Arabic in every possible aspect of life, and translating between them since I was a teenager. I began doing so professionally, as well as tutoring Arabic as a Critical Language, after I was certified in 1991. My degree is in International Relations and Political Science, and my concentration is the Middle East/North Africa, Europe and the US.

Translation is an art, not a science. One must get across the meaning, not only of each exact word, but of the context, as well - the spirit of the meaning not just the letters, to appropriate a common phrase from the Law world. If it is simply a list of scientific terms, literal translation is easy. But when translating a text, or a poem, or a story, or a marketing page, or an advertisement ... it's not so straight forward. That's why over 95% of machine or software translations not edited by a human are inaccurate at best, and culturally disastrous, ridiculously funny or even completely incomprehensible, at worst.

Unfortunately, there are translators who rely on such software to expedite their work, and there are translators who insist on literal and word for word translations, without regard to the target language's grammar, nuances, idioms, culture, history, current affairs, and linguistic or societal norms and understanding. I have served as Chief Linguist for an organization in a critical situation where protocol, culture, history, society, and current affairs have all been very important, particularly in interpreting and translating. In that capacity I was translator and interpreter, protocol and culture advisor, and performed QAQC on other linguists' product before submission. I have drafted, written, and translated business correspondence, reports, scopes of work, contracts and various communications at staff and executive level.
