Source text - English Just off the west coast of present-day Scotland, lies
the small island of Iona, a grassy promontory with
white sandy beaches, rising up out of the North Sea.
Today it is a place of quiet contemplation, relatively
undisturbed by the tour groups or visiting school
children wandering among its enchanted ruins.
Even for those who know, it is easy to forget that
twelve centuries ago, these idyllic shores were the
scenes of unimaginable violence.
The monastery of Iona is the symbolic heart of
Scottish Christianity, one of the oldest and most
important religious centers in Western Europe. It
was founded by the Irish monk Columba in the sixth
century and became the focal point for the spread of
the faith throughout Scotland.
In the early centuries, the monks came to seek
seclusion among the ‘desert’ of the Atlantic Ocean,
and built simple beehive-shaped stone huts where
they could concentrate on their prayers and vows of
poverty and obedience. Over time, however, the
small community became a major pilgrimage site,
and a great medieval center of learning. It
developed into a training school for monks with
special rooms for the copying of manuscripts called
scriptoriums that produced works of art famous
throughout Europe. Chief among these was the
‘Book of Kells’, an illuminated collection of the
four gospels that was described by its Irish
contemporaries as “the most precious object in the
western world”

Source text - English FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative
which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit
belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case
where my very senses reject their own evidence.
Yet, mad am I not--and very surely do I not dream.
But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburden
my soul. My immediate purpose is to place before
the world, plainly, succinctly, and without
comment, a series of mere household events. In
their consequences, these events have
terrified--have tortured--have destroyed me. Yet I
will not attempt to expound them. To me, they have
presented little but Horror--to many they will seem
less terrible than baroques. Hereafter, perhaps,
some intellect may be found which will reduce my
phantasm to the commonplace--some intellect more
calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my

From my infancy I was noted for the docility and

Source text - English DURING the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless
day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung
oppressively low in the heavens, I had
been passing alone, on horseback, through a
singularly dreary tract of country; and at length
found myself, as the shades of the evening drew
on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.
I know not how it was but, with the first glimpse of
the building, a sense of insufferable
gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the
feeling was unrelieved by any of that half
pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with
which the mind usually receives even the sternest
natural images of the desolate or terrible. I looked
upon the scene before me upon the mere
house, and the simple landscape features of the
domain upon the bleak walls upon the vacant eye-
like windows upon a few rank sedges
and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees with
an utter depression of soul which I can compare to
no earthly sensation more properly
than to the afterdream of the reveler upon opium
the bitter lapse into everyday life the hideous
dropping off of the veil. There was an
iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart an
unredeemed dreariness of thought which no
goading of the imagination could torture into aught
of the sublime. What was it I paused to think what
was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of

natural objects which have the power of thus

details of the picture, would be sufficient to modify,
or perhaps to annihilate its capacity for

importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a

evidence of nervous agitation. The writer spoke of
acute bodily illness of a mental disorder which
oppressed him and of an earnest desire
to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal
friend, with a view of attempting, by the
cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his

much more, was said it the apparent heart that went
with his request which allowed me no

When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was
standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his
hand, furled round its short pole. One would have
thought, considering the nature of the ground, that
he could not have doubted from what quarter the
voice came; but instead of looking up to where I
stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his
head, he turned himself about, and looked down the
Line. There was something remarkable in his
manner of doing so, though I could not have said for
my life what. But I know it was remarkable enough
to attract my notice, even though his figure was
foreshortened and shadowed, down in the deep
trench, and mine was high above him, so steeped in
the glow of an angry sunset, that I had shaded my
eyes with my hand before I saw him at all.
“Halloa! Below”!
From looking down the Line, he turned himself
about again, and, raising his eyes, saw my figure
high above him.
“Is there any path by which I can come down and
speak to you”؟
He looked up at me without replying, and I looked
down at him without pressing him too soon with a
repetition of my idle question. Just then there came
a vague vibration in the earth and air, quickly
changing into a violent pulsation, and an oncoming
rush that caused me to start back, as though it had
force to draw me down. When such vapour as rose
to my height from this rapid train had passed me,
and was skimming away over the landscape, I
looked down again, and saw him refurling the flag
he had shown while the train went by.
I repeated my inquiry. After a pause, during which
he seemed to regard me with fixed attention, he
motioned with his rolled-up flag towards a point on
my level, some two or three hundred yards distant.
I called down to him, “All right!” and made for that
point. There, by dint of looking closely about me, I
found a rough zigzag descending path notched out,
which I followed.
The cutting was extremely deep, and unusually
precipitate. It was made through a clammy stone,
that became oozier and wetter as I went down. For
these reasons, I found the way long enough to give
me time to recall a singular air of reluctance or
compulsion with which he had pointed out the path

حينها أحسست بهزٍة غريبة في األرض والهواء, لم
واندفا قوي ٍع تلبث حتى تحولت الهزة إلى خفقة عنيفة
أجبرني على العودة إلى الوراء ثم جذبني إلى األسفل.
عندما ارتفع الد ّخان الصادر عن ذلك القطار السريع
الذي م ّر أمامي وانتشر في األرجاء كلها نظرت إلى
األسفل مجدًدا ووجدته يل ّوح بالراية بينما كان القطار
يم ّر بجواره.
سألته مجدًدا, وبعد وهل ٍة من الصمت بدا فيها مهت ًما بي
وجدته يتحرك ناحيتي وفي يده رايته الملفوفة, وعلى
مسافة ياردة أو ياردتين قلت له:
- حسنًا!

Source text - English The citizens of Huntsville, Texas, had a choice that day. They could either attend the festive opening of a new branch of the supermarket chain Brookshire Brothers, with extra special offers, or watch the execution of double axe murderer Karla Faye Tucker in The Walls prison in the centre of town, less than two miles away.
Huntsville chose en masse for the execution. With the exception of Hester. That day, in that same Huntsville, she married a death row inmate.
The courthouse where British Hester wedded, is two blocks away from The Walls. It was quiet when she checked in with the registrar at 2 in the afternoon.
Marrying a partner who cannot be at the wedding, because he is a soldier on a mission abroad for example, or if he’s locked up on death row, is done by proxy. In olden days the bride would lay a glove on the altar as a symbol of the consent of the absent partner, these days she brings a representative; the helpful Hunstvillian Doreen, Hester’s taxi chauffeur, stood in for the convict at the ceremony.
Translation - Arabic كان لدى سكّان مدينة هنتسفيل التابعة لولاية تكساس خيارٌ من اثنين ذلك اليوم، إما أن يحضروا حفل افتتاح الفرع الجديد لسلسلة متاجر (بروك شاير براذرز)، أو أن يشاهدوا تنفيذ حكم الإعدام في حق القاتلة كارلا فاي تاكر ذات الفأس المزدوجة في (سجن والز) وسط المدينة، أي على بُعد أقل من ميلين.
أجمع سكّان المدينة على مشاهدة تنفيذ حكم الإعدام، ربما باستثناء هيستر التي، وفي اليوم ذاته، تزوجت من أحد المحكوم عليهم بالإعدام.
تقع قاعة المحكمة التي تزوجت فيها هيستر البريطانية على بُعد مجمّعين سكنيين من (سجن والز). كان الجو هادئًا عندما سجّلت وصولها لدى موثّق الزواج في تمام الثانية بعد الظهر.
يُتمّم الزواج من شريكٍ غائب، ربما لأنه جندي على ذمة مهمةٍ عسكرية بالخارج على سبيل المثال، أو لأنه مسجونٌ ينتظر تنفيذ حكم الإعدام في حقه، بالوكالة. فيما سبق، كانت العروس تضع قفازًا على المذبح في الكنيسة كرمزٍ لقبولها الشريك الغائب، أما في هذه الأيام، فالعروس تحضر من ينوب عنه، وفي هذه الحالة كان دورين، مواطنٌ متعاون من هنتسفيل وهو في الوقت ذاته سائق تاكسي هيستر، يحل محل المُدان في حفل الزفاف.
