Source text - Latvian Pirmie zinātniskie pētījumi par celmu izmantošanu biokurināmā sagatavošanai un par celmu izstrādes ietekmi uz meža atjaunošanos Latvijā veikti 19. gadsimta otrajā pusē (Bode 1840). Pēc neatkarības iegūšanas 20. gadsimta aktualizējās energoneatkarības jautājumi un mežsaimnieki atgriezās pie celmu izstrādes un ar to saistīto meža atjaunošanas problēmu risināšanas. Tāpat kā tagad, arī toreiz pastāvēja pretēji viedokļi; piemēram, O. Ceichners uzskatīja, ka celmu spridzināšana sekmē barības vielu izskalošanos un augsnes eroziju, tāpēc ieteica valsts mežos neveikt celmu izstrādi (Ceichners 1929). Tajā pat laikā viņš un citi pētnieki atzina, ka celmu izstrāde sekmē dabisko atjaunošanos priežu mežos un neatstāj negatīvu ietekmi uz nākamās aprites augiem (Vasiļevskis 2007). K. Lange bija viens no aktīvākajiem celmu izmantošanas aizstāvjiem un uzskatīja celmu atstāšanu cirsmās satrūdēšanai mazmežainos rajonos par nepareizu (Lange 1925). Pirms 2. Pasaules kara neatkarīgajā Latvijā gada laikā sagatavoja 730 tūkst. m3 celmu malkas gadā. 1939. gadā celmu malkas gatavošanai ieteica izmantot visas kailcirtes. Tajā laikā celmus ieguva ar spridzināšanas metodi vai ar speciāli šim nolūkam konstruētām svirām (Vasiļevskis 2007).
Translation - English The first studies in Latvia on using stumps for biofuel production and on the impact of stump processing on forest regeneration were performed in the second half of the 19th century (Bode, 1840). In the 20th century, after Latvia’s independence was declared, energy independence became topical, and forest managers focused again on stump processing and issues related to forest regeneration. The same as now, there were opposite opinions; for example, O. Ceichners believed that stump explosion promoted the flushing of nourishing elements and soil erosion, therefore he suggested not to perform stump processing in state forests (Ceichners, 1929). At the same time, he and other researchers acknowledged that stump processing promoted natural regeneration in spruce forests and did not have a negative impact on the next cycle vegetation (Vasilevskis, 2007). K. Lange was one of the most active advocates of stump usage and believed that leaving stumps to rot in fellings of low-wooded regions was wrong (Lange, 1925). Before World War II, during the years of state independence, 7 30 thousand m3 of stump firewood was produced in Latvia annually. In 1939, it was recommended to use all clear fellings for stump firewood production. Then stumps were collected by means of explosion or specially-constructed levers (Vasilevskis, 2007).
