Source text - Arabic
Translation - English The Coptic Spy
However many arguments you have to criticize our brothers the Copts, I have many more arguments to support them. It’s true that some of them have tended towards sectarian extremism or separatism. It’s also true that some of them have supported those who call – and who are Muslims, mind you – for bigoted reactions to the mistakes that certain Egyptian Muslims have made. Some have supported such reactions even when they have almost crossed or have actually have crossed the line. On the other hand, have any of you, in the past few decades, heard of a Christian Egyptian who has been arrested on charges of spying for Israel? Can any of you name a Coptic Egyptian who has faced accusations of betraying his country or of cooperating in plots to threaten the well-being of his country? Can any of you recall the last time a Coptic Egyptian was accused of endangering national security or ignoring his duties as a citizen of Egypt?
Have you seen a Christian citizen eat or smoke in front of a Muslim during Ramadan?
Have you ever heard a Christian citizen curse religion as so many of us Muslims have been doing these days?
Have you ever heard of a Christian celebrate because of the state of Egypt’s relations with Israel, and announce his pride over the subject day in and day out like some publishers in our country do?
Have you ever heard of a Christian Palestinian who was found guilty in Palestine of spying for Israel?
Have you heard of Bishop Kabootshi who was the first to raise his voice against the Israeli occupation forces in Jerusalem, and that before any Muslim, including the sheikhs in the city, even lifted a finger? Just so you know, he ended up spending half of his life in Israeli prisons.
Have you heard of Hanaan ‘Ashrawi, about whom Yasser Arafat proudly declared, “If Israel has Golda Meir, then the Palestinians have Hanaan ‘Ashrawi!”
Have you heard of Sinaa’ al-Maheedli, the Lebanese Christian who detonated herself amongst a group of American Marines in al-Awzaa’i, killing more than 200 of them?
Have you heard of the Lebanese man Samir al-Qantar who must be the most experienced of all prisoners in all the world seeing as he has spent 30 years of his life in Israeli prisons?
Have you heard of Jool Jamal, the Syrian midshipman who detonated himself alongside the French destroyer “Joan D’Arc” during the Suez Canal Crisis?
Have you heard of the young man named ‘Oryan Yousef Sa’ad, a Coptic Egyptian who volunteered to assassinate Yousef Wahba Basha because he had agreed to form his ministry in violation of the will of the people? The youth hurried to assassinate Wahba before a Muslim did in order to prevent a sectarian conflict from breaking out in the country. He did it for the sake of his homeland.
If you haven’t heard of all of these people before, then you haven’t heard anything and you don’t know anything about the nation to which you have the honor of belonging, and which refuses to bow to your misconceptions of her.

My experience with official translation lies primarily with the micro-finance company Kiva as I have just begun part-time work with them translating descriptions of loans this month. Before this I was a student of Arabic for four and a half years in various programs including programs at the Center for Arabic Study Abroad at the American University in Cairo under the auspices of a Full Arabic Language Fulbright Grant. This period of study lasted a year and half and took place immediately after I graduated from the University of Virginia, where I studied Arabic for three years. Also in college, I completed two study abroad programs in the Arab World. One was in Irbid, Jordan with the University of Virginia’s intensive Arabic language program at Yarmouk University, which lasted a period of two months. The second was in Cairo, Egypt with Home Language International for a period of five weeks. As can be seen from my record, though I am still in the early stages of beginning work as a translator, I have extensive experience with Arabic in many fields both scholarly and journalistic, and I am able to read Arabic texts with little to no difficulty. I have many samples of practice translations I have done on my own initiative, and if you would like to see any of these samples, I welcome such requests.
I graduated from the University of Virginia with a major in Middle Eastern Studies and am therefore well acquainted with the culture, history and current events of that region. I also obtained a minor in Physics during my time in college, and as a result, I am able to translate light texts dealing with scientific topics.
I am currently (February 16, 2011) located in Greece due to the recent political instability in Egypt. I plan to relocate to Cairo as soon as possible, which will likely be in two weeks. I will have internet access wherever I am located.
Thank you very much for your time and your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you if you find that my services might be of use to you.
Sincerely,
Scott Cole
