Visto il successo ‘postumo’ della classica PX, Piaggio ha deciso di rimettere in produzione la Vespa PX, per il momento solo con motore due tempi
Trentanni...e
Il 2010 è il trentesimo anniversario della nascita della mitica Vespa PX e Piaggio decide di festeggiarlo rimettendo in commercio proprio la Vespa PX originale, quella con il cambio a quattro marce al manubrio e la scocca in lamiera: uno scooter venduto in oltre tre millioni di pezzi e il cui successo sembra non soffrire il passare del tempo, inserendolo di diritto nella storia del motociclismo, per la diffusione planetaria, la longevità e l’originalità del progetto. Originalità che, tuttavia, nelle ultimi stagioni era stata messa in difficoltà da un costruttore indiano che, con molta lungimiranza imprenditoriale, ha deciso di importare nel nostro paese lo stesso scooter sotto altro nome, facendo numeri importanti.
Cilindrate classiche
Forse è stato proprio il successo della sua omologa indiana a far prendere la decisione di tornare a produrre la PX ‘vera’, ma anche se non fosse, è chiaro che la richiesta per questo modello è ancora alta e, potendo, non avrebbe avuto molto senso lasciare ad altri il ‘patrimonio’ di un veicolo-icona come la PX. Questa torna dunque sul mercato nelle cilindrate classiche, 125 e 150, con motorizzazione due tempi aggiornate alla normativa Euro3. Queste dovrebbero garantire almeno un paio di stagioni di tranquilità tecnica, dato che la normativa Euro4 entrerà in vigore solo dal 2014, ma è auspicabile che da qualche parte a Pantedera abbiano già pronto un motore 4 tempi adatto a non fare sparire di nuovo la PX dalle strade nell’arco di pochi anni.
Seduta nuova
Modifiche sostanziali al progetto originale, quindi, non ce ne sono davvero e l’unica novità di un certo peso riguarda la lunga sella della PX che è stata ridisegnata e resa più ergonomica anche se, francamente, il suo disegno risulta un po’ troppo moderno rispetto alle altre linee dello scooter. Altre piccole migliorie riguardano il faro anteriore con ottica a superfici complesse, dotato di lampada alogena e vetro ‘liscio’ come sulle moto moderne. Rimane poi la possibilità di montare la ruota di scorta, mentre il cruscotto riporta la doppia scala miglia/chilometri orari ed è dotato anche di indicatore del livelo carburante.
Tuffo nel passato
La scheda tecnica è anch’essa un tuffo nel passato, perchè il motore mantiene il raffredamento a circolazione forzata e l’avviniamento a kick starter, sebbene l’accensione sia di tipo elettronico e sia previsto il motorino d’avviamento per chi, magari, non ha l’età per ricordarsi che un tempo le moto non si accendevano schiacchiando un pulsante...Rigorosamente legate alla tradizione anche le sospensioni: anteriore a bracetto oscillante e posteriore ad ammortizzatore laterale con il motore disassato che funge da forcellone oscillante.
Il vantaggio della semplicità
Le ruote sono da 10” con pneumatici 3.50” a camera d’aria, mentre il peso della PX sfrutta l’impostazione anticonvenzionale (se confrontata agli scooter moderni, ovviamente) e rimane abbondantemente sotto i 100 chili per entrambe le motorizzazioni. Ovviamente il vano per il casco sotto la sella non c’è, perchè lì si trova il serbatoio benzina da 8 litri e il miscelatore automatico. I freni, infine, mantengono l’impostazione della PX venduta fino al 2006: disco singolo anteriore da 200mm con tubo in treccia metallica e tamburo posteriore da 150mm, azionato con il tradizionale pedale infulcrato sulla pedana. D’altra parte, il pubblico la vuole così, non è vero?

Given the ‘posthumous’ success of the classic PX, Piaggio is relaunching the Vespa PX 2-stroke.
Thirty years on…
2010 is the 30th anniversary of the legendary Vespa PX and Piaggio have decided to celebrate by re-relaunching the original Vespa PX with steel bodywork and four-gear handlebar transmission: the scooter that sold more than three million worldwide and whose popularity has never waned with the passing of time, taking its rightful place in the history of motorcycling for longevity and originality. That originality though has been compromised in recent years by an Indian manufacturer who with entrepreneurial far-sightedness has brought us the same scooter under a different name, and has had considerable success with it.
Classic engine
The very success of the Indian version may have been the catalyst that brought the ‘real’ PX back into production. But even if it wasn’t, the fact that the model is clearly still in high demand is reason enough to want to ensure that the legacy of an iconic vehicle such as the PX is not left in the hands of others. The two-stroke engine then, in 125cc and 150cc versions updated to comply with Euro3 standards, returns to the market. Security on the technical side should be assured for at least a couple of seasons before Euro 4 legislation comes into effect in 2014, but let’s hope that somewhere up there in Piaggio’s Pontedera headquarters they’ve got an adapted four-stroke under wraps that will ensure the PX doesn’t disappear from our streets again within a few years.
New seat
There are no major changes to the original design. The only new thing of any significance in the new PX is the longer, more ergonomic seat, which frankly looks a little too modern against the classic lines of the scooter. Other small improvements include the multi-faceted optical headlamp with halogen bulb and ‘smooth’ glass as found on all modern vehicles. There’s also space for a spare wheel, speedometer in both miles and kilometres per hour and even a fuel gauge.
Blast from the past
Even the technical specifications are a blast from the past, with the forced air cooling system and kick start - albeit alongside an electronic ignition and starter motor, for the benefit of those too young to remember when motors were started just by pushing a button. As for the suspension, traditional both at the front with trailing link and single shock absorber, and at the rear with the engine casing serving as swingarm, controlled by another shock absorber.
Keeping it simple
The wheels are 10” with 3.5” tyres and inner tubes. The weight of the PX – well below 100k for both the 125 and 150 models – leaves no room for any unconventional features. The 8 litre fuel tank with automatic lubricant mixer is still under the seat of course, so no room to store a crash helmet. The brakes are the same as those on the 2006 model: single front stainless steel disc 200mm, rear drum 150mm, activated by the traditional foot pedal. Just the way we always liked it.
