While executives worldwide are gearing up their supply chains for expected recovery in global demand, the Middle East represents a special case. In our second article on supply chain management in the Middle East, based on the PRTM Global Supply Chain Trends survey 2010–2012 with 350 global participants, we look at challenges and trends facing the region over the next few years. Benefits from an eventual financial upturn will depend largely on how local companies deal with five key global supply chain trends:
Trend 1: Supply Chain Volatility and Uncertainty Have Permanently Increased
Globally, market transparency and greater price sensitivity have led to lower customer loyalty, while product commoditization has further reduced the meaning of differentiation. However, this has not yet happened in the Middle East. Options and choices for local customers are sometimes limited because of market regulations and barriers to entry, and thus it is very much a supplier’s market.

في الوقت الذي يقوم به كبار المدراء حول العالم بتجهيز سلسلة التوريد لشركاتهم وتحضيرها للاستجابة للتعافي المرتقب في الطلب العالمي، تمثّل منطقة الشرق الأوسط حالة خاصّة من نوعها قياسا بالآخرين. في تحقيقنا الثاني حول إدارة سلسلة التوريد في الشرق الأوسط، نسلط الضوء على التحدّيات التي تواجه المنطقة خلال السنوات القليلة القادمة والتوجّهات المتنامية في قطاع سلسلة التوريد، وذلك بناءاً على نتائج البحث الذي قامت به شركة "PRTM للاستشارات الإداريّة" لاستشراف التوجهات العالميّة في قطاع سلسلة التوريد والذي استطلع آراء 350 من المختصّين في هذا المجال من حول العالم. وقد خلص التحقيق إلى أن مستوى نجاح شركات الشرق الأوسط في الاستفادة من أيّ طفرة ماليّة مرتقبة سيعتمد على كيفيّة تعاملهم مع خمسة توجّهات عالمية بدأت تتشكّل في قطاع سلسلة التوريد.
التوجه الأوّل: الانخفاض الدائم في نسبة اليقين وارتفاع احتمالات التقلّبات المتوقّعة في القطاع
يؤدّي ارتفاع نسبة الشفافيّة في السوق العالمي ومعدّل الحساسيّة للأسعار إلى انخفاض درجة ولاء العملاء، ويساهم تقارب أشكال ونوعيّة السلع في العرض وتخفيف الميزة الناتجة عن ابراز الاختلاف، ولكن هذا التوجّه مازال غير جلي في سوق الشرق الأوسط حيث يواجه المستهلكين المحليين مجموعة محدودة وشبه نمطيّة من الخيارات المتاحة نتيجة للتشريعات المفروضة وحواجز أخرى تمنع دخول السّوق، لتصبح الأفضليّة في سوق الشرق اللأوسط للعرض، لا للطلب.

The Coca-Cola System supports a variety of social and environmental programs to contribute to the
sustainability of the communities in the Arab states.
We invested more than $5 million over the last 5 years in social programs in the Arab States. Funding of
these programs was provided mainly by The Coca-Cola Foundation, The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation,
Business Units and our bottling partners in the Arab States. Some of these initiatives include:
EDUCATION
. American University of Beirut endowment program and establishment of the Olayan Marketing
School
. Coca-Cola schools.com program launched in 2001 under the auspices of H.M. Queen Rania of
Jordan has reached around 50 community schools, 15 of them being in the Palestinian Authority
Areas and 15 of them in Jordan. Computers, software, equipment and furniture were donated
to the schools and training provided to teachers and students.
. Supporting educational activities of Junior Achievement and Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) in
several countries
. Scholarship support for talented students
WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
. Arab States Water Governance Program (implemented by UNDP Regional Bureau of Arab
States). As the only private sector entity supporting this program, Coca-Cola initiated 3 pilot
projects (Bahrain, Tunisia and Yemen) in 2009 and we are negotiating to extend our support
over the next 5 years. This program is endorsed by the Arab League and supported by its Council
of Water Ministers.
. Rural water governance projects implemented by Water and Development Alliance (WADA)
Egypt, in partnership with USAID and Global Environment and Technology Foundation.
. Rainwater harvesting (implemented by ICARDA, International Center for Agriculture and Water
Governance in Dry Areas) in Syria.
. Waste Water Management projects (implemented by ICARDA) in Jordan, Lebanon and
Palestinian Authority Areas.
. Irrigation and agricultural efficiency projects (implemented by Jordan River Foundation).
. Coastal clean-up campaigns in Egypt, Morocco, Bahrain and UAE.
. Environmental preservation (CedaRoots in Lebanon, Agadir reforestation Morocco).
HEALTH AND HUMANITARIAN AID
. Hospital libraries (Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Palestinian Authority Areas)
. Humanitarian aid
- $500K to International Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies after clashes in
Lebanon in 2006,
- $100K cash and 1 million bottled water donation to Palestinian Red Crescent after the
2008/09 events in Gaza.
. Iftar programs (Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the entire region)
. Orphanage support (in partnership with INSAN Foundation in Saudi Arabia)
ENVIRONMENT
. The Coca-Cola business in the Arab States is committed to the environmental sustainability.
. We have strategies and concrete actions in place to achieve our 2020 Vision by:
- Not growing the carbon-footprint while growing the business
- Reducing water use for production and making up for the environmental impact on water
and climate by community water stewardship programs and environmental preservation
- Reducing our packaging waste.
CLIMATE AND ENERGY
. Strategies in place for not growing the carbon-footprint while growing the business.
. Morocco business reduced energy consumption by 10% in our 7 plants over the last two years
and is planning to reduce it by 40% by 2015.
. Reforestation initiative to be launched in Morocco (Agadir) and Lebanon.
. Other pilot initiatives include:
- Hybrid trucks in UAE as of 2011
- Strategy to replace fillers with ambient fillers. A new PET line installed in Yemen in 2009
already installed in, starting in Bahrain
- 5% energy savings project in Lebanon in collaboration with local UN program.
PACKAGING
. Weight reduction: In line with our global commitment to deliver 7% weight reduction across
packages by 2015;
- Pilot Coca-Cola operations in Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, UAE, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia
started weight reduction projects (returnable glass bottles and PET) in 2009.
. Recycling: While we totally abide with the environmental rules and legislations of the countries
that we operate in, The Coca-Cola System is also working to lead the industry for establishment
of recycling systems and facilities to serve as a model to other countries once infrastructure
allows. We plan to establish a recycling facility in the UAE.
. Construction of solid waste treatment and recycling plant in Hurghada, Egypt.
WATER
. Water Use Ratio reduction: Aligned with The Coca-Cola Company commitment to reduce water
use ratio. Because of limited rainfall in the region, we focus on reduction of water use and
community water stewardship rather than replenishment.
. Water usage in Morocco was reduced by 20% in the last 4 years and will be reduced by an extra
20% by 2025.
. Waste water management: As per The Coca-Cola Company guidelines, all plants in the Arab
States will have completed establishment of waste water treatment facilities by 2011.
. Water stewardship: The Coca-Company has built partnerships with UNDP Regional Bureau of
Arab States, Jordan River Foundation, USAID, Water and Development Alliance and ICARDA
(International Center for Water Governance and Agriculture in Dry Areas) for major water
stewardship initiatives across the Arab States.

• دعم النشاطات التعليميّة لبرامج Junior Achievement و Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) في العديد من البلدان.
• توفير المنح الدراسيّة للطلاب المتفوّقين.
الثروة المائيّة والبيئة المستدامة
• شركة كوكا كولا هي الشريك الوحيد من القطاع الخاص الذي يدعم "برنامج الدول العربيّة لإدارة حكم الثروة المائيّة" حيث قامت بالمبادرة بتنفيذ ثلاثة برامج مبدئيّة في البحرين وتونس واليمن في عام 2009، ونحن في صدد مناقشة التفاصيل لاستمرار هذه الشراكة لخمسة سنوات قادمة. يذكر أن هذا البرنامج يتم تطبيقه من قبل المكتب الإقليمي العربي لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للتنمية وهو معتمد من جامعة الدول العربيّة من خلال لجنة وزراة الماء التابعة له.
• برامج إدارة حكم الثروة المائيّة في الريف والتي يتم تطبيقها من قبل "تحالف الثروة المائيّة والتنمية" Water and Development Alliance (WADA) في مصر وذلك بالاشتراك مع USAID والمؤسسة العالميّة للبيئة والتكنلوجيا.
• مشروع حصاد مياه الأمطار في سورية والذي يقوم بتنفيذه "المركز العالمي للزراعة وإدارة حكم الثروة المائية في المناطق الجافّة (ICARDA).
• مشاريع إدارة مياه الصرف والذي تقوم بتنفيذه ICARDA في الأردن ولبنان والمناطق الفلسطينيّة.
• مشاريع الريّ والكفاءة في استخدام المياه التي تقوم بتنفيذه مؤسسة نهر الأردن.
• حملات تنظيف السواحل في مصر والمغرب والبحرين والإمارات.
• برامج حماية البيئة في لبنان (مع مؤسسة CedaRoots) والمغرب (مع مؤسسة أغادير).
الصحّة والمساعدات الإنسانيّة
• إنشاء المكتبات في المستشفيات (في الأردن ولبنان والبحرين والمناطق الفلسطينيّة).
• المساعدات الإنسانيّة:
o 500 ألف دولار تم تقديمها للّجنة الدوليّة للصليب والهلال الأحمر بعد الحرب في لبنان عام 2006.
o 100 ألف دولار تم تقديمها نقداً بالإضافة إلى مليون دولار منح عينيّة بشكل مياه معدنيّة معبأة تم تقديمها لهيئة الهلال الأحمر الفلسطيني بعد أحداث 2008/2009 في قطاع غزّة.
• برامج "إفطار صائم" في مصر والمغرب والسعوديّة ودول أخرى في المنطقة.
• دعم الأيتام (بالتعاون مع "مؤسسة إنسان") في السعوديّة.
البيئة
• تلتزم شركة كوكا كولا بالتنمية البيئيّة المستدامة لا سيما في الدول العربيّة.
• لدينا استراتيجيّات وخطط واضحة لتحقيق رؤيتنا لعام 2020 وذلك من خلال:
o تنميّة الأعمال من دون أي زيادة ببصمة الكاربون المرافقة لها.
o التقليل من استهلاك المياه والتعويض عن الأثر السلبي لهذا الاستخدام من خلال المساهمة في برامج المحافظة على الثروة المائيّة والبيئة.
o التقليل من النفايات الناتجة عن المستوعبات التي ننتجها.
المناخ والطاقة
• نعمل حاليّاً وفق استراتيجيّة تضمن تنميّة الأعمال من دون أي زيادة ببصمة الكاربون المرافقة لها.
• زادت مصانعنا السبعة في المغرب الكفاءة في استخدام الطاقة بمعدّل 10% خلال السنتين الماضيتين ومن المخطط ارتفاعها إلى 40% قبل نهاية 2015.
• من المخطط إطلاق مشاريع إعادة التشجير في لبنان والمغرب.
• تتضمن المبادرات مشاريع أخرى مثل:
o استخدام شاحنات هجينة في الإمارات ابتداءاً من 2011.
o استراتيجيّة موضوعة لاستبدال آلات التعبئة بأخرى أكثر محافظة على البيئة. تم تطبيقها في اليمن في 2009 وبدأ العمل عليها في البحرين.
o التعاون مع برنامج محلّي للأمم المتحدة في لبنان للتقليل من الطاقة المستهلكة بنسبة 5%.
المستوعبات والبيئة المستدتامة
• تخفيف الوزن: وذلك ضمن التزامنا العالمي بتخفيف وزن المستوعبات بنسبة 7% قبل نهاية 2015:
o بدأنا بتنفيذ برامج أوّلية لتحقيق هذا الرقم من خلال استخدام المستوعبات الزجاجيّة والبلاستيكيّة القابلة لإعادة التعبئة في عام 2009، وذلك في مصر والمغرب والأردن والإمارات ولبنان والسعوديّة.
• إعادة التدوير: نحن نلتزم بجميع المعايير والقوانين البيئيّة في جميع البلدان التي نعمل بها، إضافةً، تعمل شركة كوكا كولا على لعب دور قيادي في إنشاء مصانع إعادة التدوير لتشكّل مثالاً للدول المجاورة. وننوي إنشاء مصنع إعادة تدوير في الإمارات.
• إنشاء مركز معاجة وتدوير النفايات الصلبة في الغردقة في مصر.
الثروة المائيّة
التقليل من نسبة المياه المستخدمة في عمليّة التصنيع:
• بالموازاة مع التزامنا بتقليل نسبة المياه المستخدمة، نركز الجهود على المساعدة في بناء ثقافة الترشيد في الاستهلاك وحسن إدارة الموارد المائيّة وذلك لشح المياه الذي تتصف به المنطقة بشكل عام.
• تم تخفيض معدّل المياه المستهلكة في التصنيع في مصانعنا في المغرب بنسبة 20% في السنوات الأربعة الماضية وسيتم تخفيضها بنسبة 20% إضافيّة قبل نهاية عام 2025.
معالجة مياه الصرف
• عملاً بإرشادات شركة كوكا كولا المطبّقة عالميّاً، سيتم التأكد من إنشاء مرافق معالجة مياه الصرف في جميع مصانعنا قبل نهاية عام 2011.
