Known variously by different sources as Thatch, Teach, Theach, Tache, Titche, Teatch, Tack, and more, we are fairly certain this Edward was born in or around Bristol and took to the sea at an early age, most likely in his teens. It is also speculated that he arrived in the West Indies quite soon after leaving England.
If this was indeed the case, Ed Thatch would have seen his fair share of the War of Spanish Succession, a protracted fight between most of the Empires of Europe that pitted Britain against royalist Spain and France. In these early years, from 1700 to 1713, he would have been a privateer or at the very least a merchant seaman, doing his part for the crown -- Queen Anne at the time.
But with the Treaty of Utrecht bestowing peace upon a troubled Europe in 1713, Thatch and his fellow sailors would have found themselves far from home and out of work. They thus turned to piracy as a means of sustaining themselves. In the ensuing years, Thatch befriended a Captain named Benjamin Hornigold and soon after joined his crew as quartermaster, at some point between late 1714 and early 1716.
Settling in Nassau, Thatch, Hornigold, and the rest of the "Flying Gang" as these pirates called themselves, began cooking up schemes far larger than most pirates of the era dared dream. Wanting nothing less than a country of their own, they worked to turn Nassau into a place of liberty and freedom for all who desired an escape from the bonds of imperial rule.
As Thatch's reputation as a worthy and fearsome seaman grew, so did his ideas about piracy. At some point in the latter half of 1717, having grown a long and frightful beard, he took to calling himself "Blackbeard", and worked at every turn to bolster his legend as the most feared pirate in the West Indies. Thatch reveled in the power of a good legend, and worked hard to cultivate his... frequently sticking lit slow-matches in his hat to raise a frightening cloud, or challenging his crews to endure long stretches below deck as burning sulfur clouded the hold.
After helping Hornigold take command of a number of vessels, Edward Thatch finally acquired a ship of his own in September, 1717 -- a vessel called "The Adventure" -- Captained by the most unlikely pirate of them all, one Stede Bonnet. For two months, Thatch captained the Adventure, with Stede content to tag along as a passenger. But in November Thatch's fortunes improved further when he captured a massive French slave ship called La Concorde. Renaming her Queen Anne's Revenge in honor of his former Stuart Queen, Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch was now one of the most feared and deadly pirates in the West Indies.
For the next year he terrorized the West Indies and environs, before sailing north to the British colonies in North America. Here he frightened the inhabitants of an entire city when he blockaded the port of Charleston, South Carolina, in an attempt to acquire medicine for his ailing crew.
But shortly after this audacious gambit, Blackbeard decided he'd had enough of the pirates life. He was nearing forty and, despite his ferocious reputation, had lost his love for the pirate's game. In the early summer of 1718, he half-heartedly accepted a pardon from his friend Charles Eden, Governor of North Carolina. But by late August of that same year he had fallen back into his old habits, restricting his activities to the southeastern coast of the North American British colonies. Unbeknownst to him, the Governor of Virgina, Alexander Spotswood, was keenly aware of his continued piracies, and was busy organizing a party to "extirpate this next of vipers".
In November of 1718, Spotswood offered money to Lieutenant Maynard to see the job done. Taking command of a few fast ships well suited to the shallow inlets where Blackbeard was known to hide, Maynard set off in search of his prize. He learned from passing ships that Blackbeard was likely anchored on inland side of Ocracoke island, an ideal haunt for a pirate. As dusk fell on November 21st, Maynard and his crew spotted Blackbeard's rag-tag group, but decided to hold off their attack until the tide rose. In the early hours of the following day, Mayard's crew slipped into the bay and approached Blackbeard's ship. They were greeted by a sudden volley of pistol shots and cannon fire. This caused Maynard to retreat, giving Blackbeard and his crew time to slip through the shallow waters and attempt an escape.
But the tenacious Maynard pressed on and soon caught Blackbeard in his fleeing sloop. Blackbeard fired another devastating broadside at Maynard's ship, killing some and wounding a majority. When Blackbeard surveyed the damage he had wrought, he saw no movement aboard Maynards ship and assumed he had killed the majority of its crew and swiftly ordered his crew to attack the crippled vessel.
Little did he know, Maynard had ordered the majority of his crew to hide below deck and await the order to attack. When Blackbeard and his men boarded, Maynard's sailors sprung upon them. A swift and brutal battle ensued, with Maynard's men quickly gaining the upper hand. By all reports, Blackbeard fought like an enraged Demon, taking five pistol shots and two dozen stab and slang wounds.
But even legends are mortal, and Blackbeard was felled at last by the stroke of a broadsword across the back of his neck. Felled and decapitated, his headless body was tossed overboard where -- by some accounts -- it swam three times around the ship before sinking. His head was hung from the bowsprit of Maynard's ship and carted back to Governor Spotswood as proof that the feared pirate Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch had been killed. Almost three centuries later however, Blackbeard's legend remains very much alive.

S velkou mírou jistoty můžeme říct, že se narodil někde v okolí Bristolu a na moře se vydal v mladém věku, pravděpodobně někde kolem třináctého roku. Rovněž kolují spekulace o tom, že připlul do Karibiku poměrně brzy poté, co opustil Anglii.
Kdyby tomu bylo opravdu tak, znamenalo by to, že Ed Thatch zažil velkou část Války o španělské dědictví, tedy vleklé bitvy mezi většinou evropských říší, ve které stála Británie proti Španělsku s Francií. V tomto mladém věku byl od roku 1700 do roku 1713 privatýrem nebo alespoň obchodním námořníkem a pracoval pro korunu -- tenkrát pro královnu Annu.
Jenže v době, kdy byl v roce 1713 v sužované Evropě přijat Utrechtský mír, se Thatch spolu s dalšími námořníky nacházeli daleko od domova a ocitli se najednou bez práce. Stali se tedy piráty a pirátství využívali jako prostředek k přežití. V následujících letech, někdy mezi koncem roku 1714 a začátkem roku 1716, se Thatch spřátelil s kapitánem Benjaminem Hornigoldem a krátce na to rozšířil jeho posádku coby kormidelní poddůstojník.
Thatch, Hornigold a zbytek „Létajícího gangu“, jak si tito piráti říkali, se usídlili v Nassau a začali spřádat plány mnohem větší, než o jakých se většina tehdejších pirátů odvažovala snít. Chtěli pouze svou vlastní zemi, a tak pracovali na tom, aby z Nassau udělali svobodné místo pro všechny, kteří toužili uniknout z okovů imperiální vlády.
Thatchovy představy o pirátství rostly společně s jeho pověstí váženého a obávaného námořníka. Někdy v druhé polovině roku 1717 si nechal narůst dlouhé strašlivé vousy a začal si říkat „Černovous“. Snažil se, seč to šlo, aby vybudoval legendu o nejobávanějším pirátovi v celém Karibiku. Thatch si v síle dobré legendy liboval a snažil se ji pěstovat… často mu z klobouku trčely pomalu hořící doutnáky, které vytvářely děsivý oblak, nebo vyzýval své posádky, aby trávily dlouhé plavby v podpalubí, kde nákladový prostor zahalovala oblaka z hořící síry.
Když Edward pomohl Hornigoldovi zrekvírovat nespočet plavidel, konečně v září roku 1717 získal svou vlastní loď jménem „Adventure“. Loď patřila tomu nejpochybnějšímu pirátovi všech dob, Stedovi Bonnetovi. Thatch na Adventure velel asi dva měsíce a Stede se bohatě spokojil s rolí pasažéra. V listopadu ale Thatch obsadil obrovskou francouzskou otrokářskou loď La Concorde a jeho majetek se ještě více rozrostl. Na počest své bývalé Královny Stuartovny loď přejmenoval na Pomstu královny Anny a stal se jedním z nejobávanějších a nejsmrtelnější pirátů v celém Karibiku.
Karibik a okolí terorizoval po celý následující rok a potom se vypravil na sever do britských kolonií v Severní Americe. Tam zatarasil charlestonský přístav v Jižní Karolíně a děsil obyvatele celého města. Chtěl totiž získat léky pro svou churavějící posádku.
Krátce po tomto odvážném kousku dospěl Černovous k názoru, že už má pirátského života dost. Táhlo mu na čtyřicet a i navzdory své divoké pověsti ztratil pro pirátské řemeslo zápal. Začátkem léta 1718 váhavě přijal milost od svého přítele Charlese Edena, který byl guvernérem Severní Karolíny. Koncem srpna toho roku ale znovu propadl starým zvykům. Svoje aktivity však omezil na jihovýchodní pobřeží severoamerických britských kolonií. To ovšem netušil, že jeho pokračující pirátské aktivity bedlivě sleduje virginský guvernér Alexander Spotswood, který dával dohromady skupinu pro „vymýcení tohoto vrhu zmijí“.
V listopadu 1718 Spotswood tuto práci za úplatu zadal poručíkovi Maynardovi. Ten se ujal velení několika rychlých lodí uzpůsobeným pro plavbu v mělkých zátokách, o nichž bylo známo, že se v nich Černovous ukrývá, a vydal se pátrat po své trofeji. Od proplouvajících lodí se dozvěděl, že Černovous nejspíš kotví na vnitrozemské straně ostrova Ocracoke, který byl pro piráta ideálním útočištěm. Když 21. listopadu padl soumrak, Maynard a jeho posádka spatřili Černovousovu ubohou chátru. Ale rozhodli se s útokem počkat až do přílivu. Následující den v časných hodinách Maynardova posádka proklouzla do zátoky a dostala se až k Černovousově lodi. Dostalo se jí uvítání v podobě záplavy střel z pistolí a dělových salv. Maynard byl nucen se stáhnout, čímž poskytl Černovousovi a jeho posádce čas pokusit se o útěk přes mělčiny.
Houževnatý Maynard si ale šel neúnavně za svým a brzy Černovousovu prchající šalupu dostihl. Černovous vypálil na Maynardovu loď další ničivou salvu z boku, kterou zabil a poranil většinu mužů. Při průzkumu způsobených škod Černovous neviděl na palubě Maynardovy lodi žádný pohyb a domníval se, že pobil většinu posádky. Rychle tedy své posádce zavelel, aby na ochromené plavidlo zaútočila.
Jenže to netušil, že Maynard nařídil většině své posádky, aby se ukryla v podpalubí a počkala na příkaz k útoku. Když se Černovous se svými muži nalodil, Maynardovi muži je překvapili. Následovala rychlá a nelítostná bitva, ve které Maynardovi muži záhy získali převahu. Dle svědectví Černovous bojoval jako nelítostný ďábel. Utrpěl pět ran z pistole a dva tucty bodných a sečných zranění.
Ale i legendy jsou smrtelné, takže Černovous konečně padl seknutím širokého meče zezadu přes krk. Jeho padlé bezhlavé tělo bylo vrženo přes palubu, přičemž -- dle některých zpráv -- obeplulo třikrát loď, než se potopilo. Jeho hlava byla zavěšena na čelen Maynardovy lodi a byla zavezena guvernéru Spotswoodovi jako důkaz, že obávaný pirát Edward „Černovous“ Thatch zemřel. Legenda o Černovousovi však zůstává živá i o tři staletí později.

Rotate the tie rod to get the correct toe-in. the Toe-in must not be more than 1/16 inch ( 1.5 mm).
When the toe-in is adjusted, turn the steering wheel to the left to extend the steering cylinder rod.
When the steering cylinder rod is completely extended, the steering spindle arm must be 3/4 ｱ 1/16 inch (19 ｱ 1.5 mm) from the axle stop.
