Like the word "dynamic". Probably started as an adjective, but evolved into a noun form as time progressed. Whether some academics accept or not does not change it.

Interestingly, a French to English dictionary gives as the equivalent of the French noun "la problématique" problematics, shown as being singular and glossed as belonging to philosophy.

Perhaps the correct translation is problematics used as a singular noun in the context of philosophy, while elsewhere it needs to be paraphrased.

It is also instructive that German to English dictionaries do not give problematic as a noun as the English equivalent of the German noun "die Problematik". Here are the equivalents given in one dictionary:

It seems some people accept it, some reject it and some say it is restricted to the language of philosophy. Seeing that German has a noun "die Problematik", which I didn't know before, reminded me of this question.

Personally, I think it sounds both incorrect and inelegant when used as a noun and should be avoided except perhaps in academic tracts on philosophy.

I have just come across the noun "die Problematik" in German, which I think corresponds to "sorunsal" in Turkish, and I wonder if "quandary" is a good counterpart in English in the sense of a problem that never ceases to perplex.

It appears that the use of 'problematic' as a noun is deemed acceptable by some in academic articles in certain fields. I, personally, feel dubious about this.
