neutral  DLyons: That paper is written by a native Spanish speaker :-) A "continuously varying variable" is just an unusual way of saying a "continuous variable".

  -> I am definitely not an expert on the subject and you are right on the "native speaker" aspect. Yet, I have encountered few more uses of the same term, some from german native speakers and some form spanish ones..
