Ok, let's say that you want to tell a friend to visit a particular site this summer, and to encourage them you say they will "hitta ut till någon av pärlorna i havsbandet."

Or that you are a tourist office and want to recommend: "SKÄRGÅRDSLINJENS båtar tar du dig lätt ut till östgötaskärgårds finaste platser, pärlorna i havsbandet."


"jewels of the sea" doesn't sound exactly right.

Asker: Thanks Martin, but perhaps I should have been more explicit. It was "i havsbandet" that I was questioning, if it had a specific meaning (as it turns out, it does).

neutral  Deane Goltermann: hmm, 'pearls' is good, 'Baltic Sea' is too general and too specific -havsbandet refers to archipelago, I believe. Everyone around here seems to have their own - Stockholm, Gothenburg, east coast, west cost, ... all refered to in the definite 'et'.

  -> True about -Baltic Sea- being generic, although as the other text seems to specify the general area I'd say -Archipelago- would suffice. Otherwise it can be specified with Östgötaskärgården or, more precisely, Arkösunds, Sankt Anna, or Gryts skärgård.

If you accept this, it is largely thanks to the work of the others. I simply read what the Swedish meant exactly.
The word 'outer' is fine here and used much as in the same way as outer Hebrides islands far off the coast of Scotland or the Outer Islands (Seychelles)

  -> the pearls technically and grammatically but I see your point. Could I have also said 'the pearls of the outer archipelago'? I prefer the first however.
