The majority of the first twenty hits on google for "club team" I found referred to tennis or golf clubs, which I feel is perhaps too restricted.

References to “A team” were almost exclusively in a context of a second, “B team”. The same seems to apply with regards to “A squad” or “main team” and not at all unusual in a farmer or reserve team context.

I even found “elite squad” in some instances.

My client and I have agreed to use “main team” as the best fit.
