Explanation:
I don't think a deed (US = a conveyance of land) held in escrow and by an escrow agent is quite the same thing (also exists in the UK, namely docs. held subject to a condition vs. *stake* money held by a stakeholder). So, knowing that escrow is also a US land registration process, I am not adding escrow as an AmE answer, but leave it to US colleagues to elaborate.
