I know this has been asked before, and the translation given was "benefit limit." I've also found "excess charge" as a translation in another document online. But it seems to me that "karensbelopp" is actually describing a deductible, at least when it is used in an insurance context. Is there some difference that I'm not understanding?

Here's the text:

Vi kan lämna ersättning för läkarvårdskostnader med mera när de sammanlagda kostnaderna uppgår till minst 600 kronor. Från ersättningen gör vi avdrag med ett karensbelopp på 500 kronor.

Explanation:
The terms "karensbelopp" and "självrisk" seem to be rather synonymous.

agree  Christine Andersen: Some dictionaries mark this US, but Gyldendals Fagordbog (Danish-English) gives: many companies have been forced to take on more risks themselves, through higher deductibles, ie the part of a claim a company pays before insurance cover becomes effective
