Can someone kindly explain how 'nämde' is being used in

Nämnde Polhem generaliserade alltså precis som tyska och engelska teknologer.

I expected "namnet Polhem....."

agree  Matt Bibby: Yes this is the meaning, I think the better translation would be 'The said Polhem...' or possibly 'The above-mentioned Polhem...'. Other possibilities too, such as 'This person Polhem...'.
