Swedish term or phrase: gullök (vs. lök)
As far as I have always been concerned gullök is just a plain ordinary brown onion, and the same thing as lök.

I am currently translating a nutritional information box, however, where both words repeatedly appear listed as separate ingredients (sometimes as well as rödlök and vitlök). So it's got me wondering if I've missed something ... perhaps there is a subtle difference between these two terms?

Here's an example text:
agavesirap, cayennepeppar, svartpeppar, färsk koriander, grillad paprika, gullök, habanero, jalapenos, jasminris, Koriander, laktosfri cremefraiche, lök, Ost, paprikapulver, rapsolja, Romansallad, rödlök, rörsocker, salt, spiskummin, svarta bönor, tomat, tomatpuré, Tortilla, vitkål, vitlök, äppelcidervinäger ...

onion

Explanation:
I've never seen any specific word or term for yellow onion (though undoubtly there exists a specific scientific designation).
Lök covers a whole range of different onions that have different names in english.
"lök" is collective for all types including (flower)bulbs, but also generally refers to ordinary (yellow) and (red) onion used in cooking.
Then there's "vitlök" (white onion) which simply is garlic and "purjolök" that's leek.
I think just "onion" will suffice as long as it is yellow onion, and you probably can distinguish with "red onion" when it says "rödlök"

agree  Deane Goltermann: Just saw an old episode with Jamie cooking away, he said "add onion, does matter what kind white, yellow, red, or whatever..." Here, you have rödlök and gullök with the plain 'lök' in this context. Tells me the 'yellow' is important.

Golden onion: gul and guld are cognate words, after all.
