Your daughter's correct in that the tensor describes the stresses at a point, but the components within the tensor are stresses and cannot be described as points. The components of the tensor describe the stresses on the faces of an infinitesimal cube and the tensor is a 'grouping' of these stresses that allows the stress state at the point where this cube is to be described relative to x, y, and z coordinate directions (in this case). Each component of the tensor describes the stress on a particular plane in a particular direction. So, for example, τxy (in the 1st column of the second row of the tensor) is the shear stress in the y direction that is acting on the face of the cube normal to (perpendicular to) to the x axis. In equilibrium it's equal to τyx (in the first row, second column). There are six shear stresses in the tensor but τxy = τyx, τxz = τzx, and τyz = τzy. The remaining 3 stresses in the tensor are normal stresses. The column 1 row 1 , column 2 row 2 and column 3 row 3 quantities are the stresses normal to the three faces - σx, σy and σz. (Mum's a physicist!)

Thanks for getting back S Ben Price. Datasets and data points don't really make much sense in this context either as the 6 components are components of the stress within the structure. Quantities might work, though, as they are scalar quantities of the stresses (i.e they don't have an associated direction as a vector would, instead, the component is deemed positive or negative depending on the direction of the force at the face). If you have the sentence that follows 'COMO MÁXIMO' then it may well shed a whole lot more light on the subject.

Thanks for your help, everyone!! I also think it might be "components" and it is referring to a Cauchy stress tensor. I just can't find anything to back up the connection from infroamcións and components. Values is good, but it might be datasets as opposed to single values (data points).

I realise that 'pieces of information' is not standard terminology, but neither is '6 informaciones'.

I've seen stress components, values and equations, though I have a feeling that 'stress component' is the right term.

Helena - in the link, the term 'pieces of information' is a simplification the writer of the piece has used to help the students understand the concept and so could be correct in such a context. However, in typical physics/engineering terms this isn't the terminology that would be used in a more formal context such as an academic paper or textbook, for example. Hopefully S Ben Price can give us a bit more to go on.

I've found 'pieces of information' on page 6.

Whatever method is used to specify the stress state, there must be 6 independent pieces of information!!

If it's about the stress tensor then Slides 1 and 2 give a nice, straightforward description. http://academic.uprm.edu/pcaceres/Courses/MMII/IMoM-5A.pdf It puts it simply that "the stress at a point may be represented by 6 components" but I can't be certain that this is what you are referring to unless I can get a bit more of the context to be sure.

I think what you are talking about is related to the Cauchy stress tensor and its application. If you have a wee look at this youtube video it might help to explain what it's referring to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-YDenSoKGs . Since the forces are balanced, and the moments are balanced, then you can 'describe' the stress vector with only 6 distinct values (instead of 9) as some of the components are equal and are repeated in the matrix. Do you have the next sentence at all as it might help having a wee bit more context?

Is this a heading? If so, does it say later on what informaciones are? Data points is a possibility.
