Sólo "baguette" normalmente se refiere nada más que al tipo de pan. Y sólo sandwich puede dar a confusión, pues el pan es muy diferente. No tiene que ver con el tamaño (hay bocatas enormes y también muy pequenos, que llamamos pulgas). Tampoco la palabra viene del italiano (una búsqueda en google.it sólo da resultados españoles). Es común en españa utilizar el sufijo -ata para formas coloquiales. El hecho de verlo escrito a veces con dos tes es simplemente porque algunos restaurantes y cadenas de comida rápida creen que así "vende" más.
