1. Definir con quién (es) se quiere conectar a través de la historia que se va a contar.
Peter Guber, autor de ‘Storytelling para el éxito’ señala: “un buen narrador o “Storyteller” es aquel que comprende que es mucho más importante interesarse en la audiencia que parecer interesante.”
Para ello el primer paso es investigar sobre el público objetivo: cómo piensa, cuáles son sus intereses, preocupaciones, miedos, anhelos, aspiraciones y necesidades en este momento concreto. Así se podrá afinar el argumento de la historia para captar su atención e interés.

2. Tócale la fibra o métele el dedo en la llaga.
El segundo paso es decidir a través de qué emoción empatizar con el público priorizado: a través de una preocupación, una necesidad, un miedo, una emoción o un sentimiento. Sin embargo, no se debe olvidar al final plantear la resolución de la historia, para que se logre una asociación positiva con esa historia.

3. Definir la percepción que se quiere lograr.
Así será más fácil saber qué ideas y valores se deben representar en la historia.

4. Planteamiento, nudo y desenlace.
Toda historia bien contada ha de seguir ese esquema de tres fases: planteamiento, nudo y desen¬lace. No obstante, el orden en que se narran estas tres fases no tiene que ser necesariamente de forma lineal. La clave para captar la atención es situar al público en un contexto emocional; que la historia genere intriga o curiosidad para que el público se motive al detectar un reto interesante, un desafío, una intriga, un problema con el que nos sentimos identificados o una situación que nos conmueva.

5. Definir el personaje.
Un personaje, protagonista, a quien tiene que ocurrirle algo (positivo o negativo, según el caso) para que el público pueda identificarse o simpatizar con él. La organización no se debe presentar como protagonista de la historia sino como parte del contexto donde tiene lugar el relato. Es decir, como elemento clave que indirectamente incide y repercute de algún modo en esa historia.
