medical leave of absence

Explanation:
It is a leave of absence authorized by a doctor due to a medical condition.

Example sentence(s):
  • The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons.

medical certificate

Explanation:
In other words 'sick line', 'sick note' or 'absence cover' describe the same.

The source text states that in case of absence the employee should deliver paperwork which certifies the absence to the employer or human resources section within 24 hours of the beginning of the absence. This allows time to process the necessary subsidy, reserve the position of employment and claim social security entitlements in case of continued absence.

Employers might call them 'fit notes' nowadays.

There are also 'self-certificates'. These could be used in cases of absence from work due to ill health, when a line from a doctor could not be obtained quickly enough to give absence cover or sick leave formalities.
Employers should have self-certificates which members of staff could compete and return, if required. In so doing they could certify their own reason for short term absence, possibly less than one week.

Instead of 'compete' it should read as: 'self-certificates which members of staff (employees) could complete (fill in) and return'

Otherwise, employees would have to retrieve a form from the nearest employment centre (department of work and pensions) to explain the reasons for absence.
