Spanish term or phrase: disputa de cartel
Hello! I'm translating this opinion piece from Argentina about the struggle between former President Macri and Buenos Aires Chief of Government Rodriguez Larreta: https://www.clarin.com/opinion/larreta-vs-macri-batalla-camb...

And I came across this phrase that seems to be used mostly in Argentina(!?) based on my Google searches:

Thanks in advance!

fight for the leadership
Explanation:
I´m not at all a specialist in Argentinean politics, but after reading your article online here …:

https://www.notiar.com.ar/index.php/politica/104588-larreta-...

(…) I infer that “disputa de cartel” refers in this context to the rivalry between Horacio Rodríguez Larreta (current chief of Government of the city of Buenos Aires) and Mauricio Macri (former president of the Republic of Argentina between 2015 and 2019), i.e. to their struggle for the leadership in the political coalition Juntos por el Cambio. “Disputa de cartel” is used, in my interpretation is correct, in a figurative sense to refer to the struggle of both politicians, Rodríguez and Macri, for winning the leadership in Juntos por el Cambio. The winner will be the front runner, the leader appearing on the “carteles”, the posters, in the next campaigns.

This press article seems to confirm my approach to your query:

agree  David Hollywood: or "fight for the top spot"

-> Thank you David. Yes, something along these lines. My suggestion is based on what I read particularly in the second reference, which reveals an unequivocal fight between the two contenders ("puja por el liderazgo").

fight for the spotlight

Explanation:

agree  Robert Carter: Judging by your references there, it reminds me of the idea of "spin", i.e., trying to cast your (negative) role in a more positive light or taking credit for something you only had a minor role in.

Explanation:
A change in government is due to take place while candidates compete for the responsible position of future leadership. Disagreements and disputes are expected to take place.

The example sentence is a quote from an Argentine newspaper about the run-up to a forthcoming election for political leadership.

Example sentence(s):
  • Political researchers define it as overlapping hopes and expectations regarding leadership of the area. In the district it's simply called a fight or struggle, a poster campaign which forewarns an extensive and exhausting battle.
