I now think Alya is probably right. Callaham\'s only gives her meaning for \"шрот\", i.e. oilcake - in this case made from the cotton plant.
In German, there are two words: Schrot, with the same meaning of an animal fodder product, (it also means metal shot); and Schrott, which means scrap or waste. The Russian word must be related to the first of these, not the second.

О.А мне не жалко.
Шрот и жмых - продукты масличных культур, оставшиеся после извлечения из них масла. Соответственно, могут быть подсолнечными, соевыми, рапсовыми, горчичными, хлопковыми и др. Всего, если не ошибаюсь, существует около 65 видов масличных.
Различия: шрот получается при извлечении масла экстракцией растворителями, жмых - при прессовом отжиме. Понятно, что в первом случае масла в продукте остается меньше, чем во втором. Т.о., продукты по природе схожи и взаимозаменяемы.
Вопрос \"что лучше\" относиться к разряду \"трудно богатырям мерятся силой богатырской. У Ильи Муромца длиннее, у Добрыни - толще\". Естественно, в жмыхе выше масличность, в шроте - протеин (при прочих равных).

Ну и чтобы поставить точки над i, вот словарное определение слова \"шрот\" (разумеется, в техническом жаргоне оно может иметь более узкое и специальное значение):

ШРОТ [< нем. Schrot дробь; крупа] -- 1) охотничья дробь; 2) отход маслобойного производства, получаемый после экстрагирования жира из измельченных семян; используется как корм для скота.
