The description goes on to provide the dimensions of the полезная площадь and жилая площадь.

"Литер A" does mean "the letter A," but in writing it in an address, I omit the "letter" part. So, if it says "улица Иванова, 5, литер А", it could be "5-A Ivanov St.

I don't know, Judith. If the description seems to apply _only_ to the basement, then I imagine you could call that "Unit A." But from the way you wrote it in the question, it looked as if "Литер А" applied to the whole thing - the two-story house with the basement, in which case ... can you contrive to repeat the street number, so that it would indeed be "5-A", where "5" is the street number.

I've done SPb real estate development jobs in the past, where I was able to confirm that the letter designation applied to a whole lot or building (maybe an attached building? - I forget) within a place having a single street number. Of course, the usage could vary in different developments.

Asker: The only trouble is that the address is listed separately, i.e., below the description. Could it be that the basement has been assigned the letter A?!?!?

Asker: Rachel, I've decided to put the letter in parentheses after the basic description (before stats about area), leaving it as ambiguous as it is to me in the Russian. There is a second certificate which is equally ambiguous and I am treating it likewise. In the second case, the number is a monster and I would guess it refers to the piece of property in its entirety. Thanks again.
