FYI, the setting is late '50's Leningrad. I'm not at all familiar with the expression, but from the context I'm assuming it means that he's making money doing odd jobs on the side.

"Hustling" means putting in a lot of energy to make an extra buck/big money, which is essentially what people were doing in the 90s, while "side hustling" refers to taking on gigs in addition to one's main job for the same purpose.

But зашибать should be rendered as rake in.
It should not sound as "he did extra job or a sideline"

зашибать earning a lot of money, but it is preferable to use "rake in" to keep the tone of the original.
