Помог мне вдруг “гегемон” Федька Кривой, который к тому времени устроился на должность электрика в жилконтору, женился, совершенно перестал пить, и стал “зашибать халтуры”.

FYI, the setting is late '50's Leningrad. I'm not at all familiar with the expression, but from the context I'm assuming it means that he's making money doing odd jobs on the side.

Well, apparently, it could have been a lot of places. She was working a bunch of jobs on the side - model, club dancer, convention booth babe.

У неё было много подработок на стороне - модель, танцовщица, девушка на выставках.

It was easy for him to pick up odd jobs for extra money when he needed it.

Для него было легко найти дополнительную работу ради дополнительных денег, когда он в них нуждался.

hustling/side hustling

Explanation:
As this is marked as a lit. translation, I'd use slang that's prevalent in modern lexicon.

"Hustling" means putting in a lot of energy to make an extra buck/big money, which is essentially what people were doing in the 90s, while "side hustling" refers to taking on gigs in addition to one's main job for the same purpose.

"Everyone has a different reason for side hustling, of course. It might be to pursue a passion, save for a goal, supplement existing income or eventually transition to running your own business."

https://ideas.ted.com/4-secrets-of-successful-side-hustles/

Options: "...quit (/gave up) drinking and started hustling". I prefer this one because it sounds most natural in English and carries over the sentiment, but if you'd like to go with a more direct translation then "...quit drinking and started side hustling" is fine.

work off the books

Explanation:
*The concept of working off the books means that a person is being compensated in cash for services performed, but the payments are not recorded on the books of the employing business.*

I thought "make a fast buck" is an English idiom, if not then just "make some cash on the side"

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hmmm... Maybe just "make some cash on the side" because buck=dollar and that sounds odd given the context.

I think it is better here to use cash instead халтура,
But зашибать should be rendered as rake in.
It should not sound as "he did extra job or a sideline"

зашибать earning a lot of money, but it is preferable to use "rake in" to keep the tone of the original.
rake in some cash
