English translation: anabolic

Russian term or phrase:
In a document on recommended nutritional guidelines, nutrients are described as "performing 'plastic' functions" and "meeting the body's 'plastic', energy, and other needs."

I don't see "plastic" being used in this way in English (except in awkward translations), so I'm contemplating alternatives: structural? formative?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

the term is used in scientific literature ("anabolic" refers to the sythesis of the body's constituents and is opposite to "catabolic") as well as in popular materials related to nutrition, such as http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/pierce39.htm

Anabolism is the building up of things - a succession of chemical reactions that constructs or synthesizes molecules from smaller components, usually requiring energy in the process. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/8871.php
